The second war against the Cylons is over, and The Twelve Colonies have been destroyed. Now Commander Adama of the Battlestar Galatica and President Laura Roslin lead a ragtag fleet of refugees in a supposed search for the fabled lost thirteenth colony, Earth. However, the dangers they face are many, which compound an already difficult situation. In addition to the Cylons hunting and attacking the fleet in space and their infiltrator units carrying out sabotage--even as their former unwitting pawn, Gaius Baltar, helps in the hunt for them while hiding both his own guilt and the strange presence that haunts his every thought--the fleet also faces internal political conflict in which the rabble-rousing figure Tom Zarek is merely the loudest dissenting voice, not to mention recurring shortages of food, water, and even oxygen. In the midst of these trials, however, clues begin to appear to suggest that Adama's bluff about finding Earth might hold more truth than anyone could have guessed.
When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurface and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protect a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity - as they journey toward the fabled 13th colony, Earth.
Short summary (for readers suffering from ADS): This show isn't altogether bad, but also it is overrated by quite some margin. For the longer view, please bear with me.
From the start, I liked that the characters weren't just good or evil, each one seemed to have its very own flaws and shortcomings. Sadly, this is not enough to make them believable: In a good screenplay a character's actions follow some reasoning discernible to the viewer. With half the main characters best classified as "erratic", the series clearly fails in this department. While the actors are very good and have the power to pull you into the story, you are violently (you may take this literally) thrown back into the real world more often than not, remembering that the characters do not lead lives of their own, but instead only act on the whims of the screen writers. If the characters aren't erratic for a moment, they usually do stupid things. Anyone with half a brain wouldn't do the things that they do, and it hurts watching them. In short, I don't want to watch idiots acting like idiots. Moreover, when every idiot runs about with a gun, threatening to shoot people, sometimes even doing so, some episodes can be taken as an involuntary promotion flick for tight gun control. Thank god (or the gods) that America is not that far down the path of random violence and bloodshed (or is it already?).
There's no point in getting too deeply involved with deficiencies like technology failing or helping whenever the plot needs it most, or improbable things like a warship capable of FTL travel but lacking security cameras. SF fans have seen and believed far worse. The bigger problem is the aimlessly meandering story arch as it develops over the whole four seasons: while the Cylons might have had a plan, as the titles said, the writers clearly had no plan, and it shows more often than not. In summary they failed, with the disappointing final episodes not helping at all. Also, right from its start, the series seemed obsessed with superstitious and naive belief systems. Some episodes, especially the final four (pun intended), where but barely tolerable. Angels of God (the Gods?), give me a frakking break. Some viewers may take this all with a shrug, but it left me scratching my head. What exactly is the point? Did the writers have to take the "deus ex machina" plot device literally?
There are lots of things that this series gets right, and lots that are outstandingly good. The cast is very good and many episodes are fun to watch. However, the conclusion of the series, and the serious shortcomings in plot and character development do not warrant a rating better than 6 out of 10 points.
You know what "re-imagining" means in Hollywood-speak: it's using a familiar brand name and a couple of character names from a familiar work to sell you something completely different from what you expected. Planet of the Apes was "re-imagined" by Tim Burton and it sucked. Asimov's "I, Robot" was "re-imagined" By Alex Proyas and it sucked, too. BattleStar Galactica was re-imagined by Ronald D. Moore and...
Surprise! against all odds, and in spite, or maybe because of being completely different from the original, the new Galactica is simply stupendous. The plot, the acting, the effects, are all top notch. Mary Macdonnel and Edward J. Olmos are superb actors, and Grace park and Katee Sackhoff are not far behind. The Characters are not the original's simplistic heroes. These are fully fleshed out, multifaceted, complex characters. The tone of the show is much darker, the new cylons are much more mysterious in their intentions than the old "kill all humans" cylons. The new Baltar is a huge step forward from the old power-rangers-cheesy Baltar. all in all, there is much here to interest the more mature audience.
Yes, there are some elements that will require getting used to. Some stylistic choices have been made to enhance the feel of realism on the show: a documentary-style cinematography both in interior scenes and outer space shots. A familiar, modern day style was chosen for clothes and appliances instead of the Egyptian themed original. This is a matter of personal taste and I happen to like both choices, although I feel the second choice actually detracts from the realism as the futuristic outer-space setting and hardware clash with the all too familiar clothes and everyday objects (phones, guns, etc).
If you're a fan of the original this is what you should do: forget it's called Galactica. this is something else, which incidentally shares the same name. But watch it anyway. You wouldn't miss Babylon 5 or he West Wing or Lost just because it's not Galactica, right? So if you want quality science fiction back and on the TV screen, and you like serious, mature drama, give the new BSG a chance. It's a great show - on its own terms.
Yes, although it's producers call it a "reimagined" series, due to some slight differences. A battlestar is a very lage spaceship, kind of a cross between a battleship and an aircraft carrier. Cylons are humanoid robots created by mankind as servants and laborers. Eventually, they rebelled and declared war on their human masters. Miniseries - This 3 hour miniseries acts as a pilot for the weekly series and introduces the characters and situations.
Season 1 - Contains 13 episodes.
Season 2 - Contains 20 episodes.
Season 3 - Contains 20 episodes.
Battlestar Galactica: Razor - This 2 hour TV movie ( officially the first two episodes of Season 4 ) takes place during Season 2, with flashbacks to the miniseries and earlier, but should be viewed here.
Season 4, Part 1 - Contains 10 episodes ( also known as "Season 4.0" on DVD ).
Season 4, Part 2 - Contains 10 episodes ( also titled "Season 4.5" or "The Final Season" on DVD )
Battlestar Galactica : The Plan - This is a post-series prequel TV movie which depicted selected events of the miniseries and series from the Cylons point of view.
There are also two spin-off prequels:
Caprica - A 19 episode prequel series set 58 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica. The series deals with the creation of the Cylons, and stars Eric Stoltz as Daniel Greystone, creator of the Cylons, and Esai Morales as Joseph Adama, father of Battlestar's William Adama. Released on DVD ( and Blu-ray in certain territories ).
Battlestar Galactica : Blood & Chrome - A 2 hour prequel movie that is set during the first Cylon War, 40 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica and around 18 years after Caprica. The story follows a young William Adama ( future commander of the Galactica ) as a new recruit in the Colonial Fleet, and shows his first experience of battling the Cylons. Released on DVD and Blu-ray. Yes, the miniseries acts as a pilot, and sets up all of the events, characters, and themes of the series. If you start with episode S01E01, you will be very confused! a5c7b9f00b
