Professor Trevor Anderson receives his teenager nephew Sean Anderson. He will spend ten days with his uncle while his mother, Elizabeth, prepares to move to Canada. She gives a box to Trevor that belonged to his missing brother, Max, and Trevor find a book with references to the last journey of his brother. He decides to follow the steps of Max with Sean and they travel to Iceland, where they meet the guide Hannah Ásgeirsson. While climbing a mountain, there is a thunderstorm and they protect themselves in a cave. However, lightening collapses the entrance and the trio is trapped in the cave. They seek an exit and fall in a hole, discovering a lost world in the center of the Earth.
On a quest to find out what happened to his missing brother, a scientist, his nephew and their mountain guide discover a fantastic and dangerous lost world in the center of the earth.
I can easily say that this film will be in my top 10 of the year, and with no reservations will find its place along other adventure classics such as "Raiders" and "Batman Begins" in my all time favorites. The film clicks at a bit over 90 minutes, but its packed with amazing thrills and an interesting range of emotions originating from the newly discovered family bonds to the thrills of having reached a world within a world, and of course, not knowing whether they can ever make it back to the surface.

The three leads are incredible charming and very likable, each giving his/her best to their respective roles and doing a mighty good job. Especially remarkable is young Hutcherson, whose career is bound to develop into a long one if he continues to do work of this caliber. There the very reliable Frazer as his scientist uncle, giving us his own version of the Indiana Jones type professor.

What is most amazing about this great little film is that it resembles the movies from the 50's and 60's, with a spirit full of innocence and wonder, capable of pulling us in because it believes in the excitement of the story and the situation. There is no need for overwrought special effects that most of the time tend to distract us from the rather weak excuses for screenplays that Hollywood has been delivering for the last 20 years. In this one, loosely based on the Jules Verne's story, we go down into a world that might possibly exist, if anyone ever finds it. Yet the wonders do not start there, but on the magnificent aerial shots in Iceland, a land as exotic and wonderful as the mythical world our heroes will find eventually.

There are so many elements to please just about everyone in the audience, but the story itself doesn't feel contrived or is weak in any way. When our heroes first discover the campsite that validates all they so far believed in, it is an incredible scene, and it grows emotional as it relies heavily on the family background and not convoluted development.

Not to take credit away from the advancements made in cinema and technology of recent years, as some of the production team's contributions to the movie are indeed breathtaking in their recreation of this fantastic world and some of its inhabitants, but the director has kept a good balance, never forgetting that the real drama exists in the relationships among this amateur team of explorers.

Be ready to be swept by an incredible array of emotions and situations, as we become part of a team that brings excitement back into adventure and makes us remember how much is to go a good movie, one that delivers everything we expect from the so called professionals of the silver screen, one that gives the chills, the thrills, the jolts, the sights, the highs and lows that should always be a part of a great cinematic experience.

This movie certainly isn't going to win any acting awards (sorry Brendan), and the story is quite weak - despite it being based on a classic. That said, it's saved by the 3D which was excellent.

I would say however that it is quite possible that it is BECAUSE it was in 3D that the story was not great. In my mind I can see a room full of writers and a director saying, "oh wouldn't it be really good if we did this in 3D", and wouldn't it be good if we did that.... rather than "how can we do justice to the book"

Also whatever you do, don't expect technically accuracy.. so many things did not make sense!

In conclusion, I didn't come out disappointed, but then I didn't come out thinking wow!!
You don't believe a second of it, but it's easy to enjoy, partly because of the casting of all three leads.
Although Journey to the Center of the Earth (Voyage au centre de la Terre) (1864) was written by French science fiction writer Jules Verne [1828-1905], the movie doesn't actually follow the book. The basic premise of the movie is that Jules Verne's books actually happened and are not just works of fiction. The actual book, Journey to the Center of the Earth, is used by the main characters as a guideline for their own voyage. No, it is actually only in 3D where theaters have a RealD digital projector. So, IMAX does not present this film in 3D. Otherwise the movie is also available in 2D at normal theaters. The story is essentially identical, but the 3D version was shot using a slightly different script to emphasize its 3D effects.
