A brilliant scientist left for dead returns to exact revenge on the people who burned him alive.
Peyton Westlake is a scientist who has discovered a way to produce synthetic skin. This could revolutionise skin grafting, except for one minor glitch; the synthetic skin degrades after 100 minutes of exposure to light. When gangsters attack Peyton, he is horrifically burnt, and assumed dead. In his quest for revenge, Peyton, aka the Darkman, is able to take on the appearance of anyone (using the synthetic skin,) but he only has 100 minutes per disguise.
For me, Raimi is an underrated creator : he has a bit the same talent as Spielberg (writing, casting, directing, producing) but without his recognition and money. Sure Raimi wants to have fun while liking dark and horror so he alienates a part of his audience but he is full of original ideas: Here, he shows that he can do a real super-hero movie well before CGI effects and without a big budget. And what's amazing it's that is even better than the real thing : for one time, the origin story is interesting, the power is original and the LA setting is a change from the old metropolis. Raimi never misses the opportunity to a stunning and horrific frame or angle, his camera is like alive by itself and he stages great action sequence ! Ice on the cake : he has a wonderful cast to play with a Liam bringing all his massive drama and Frances rather convincing as the crying girlfriend ! Anf for sure, you will find all his usual cameos : Bruce Campbell, his brother and himself ! So it's a dream to watch the works of that guy such passionate in movies !
Twelve years before the success of Spider-Man and The Evil Dead, director Sam Raimi brought us this alternative superhero. Liam Neeson plays Peyton Westlake, a scientist with a near working discovery of making human real skin, at the moment though it works for a short while. His experiment is almost ruined though when the lab is vandalised and then destroyed by Robert G. Durant's (Bean's Larry Drake) gang, hired by Louis Strack Jr. (Colin Friels). Peyton was left for dead, but somehow survived being dunked in experimental fluid and being blown up. He has now turned into a hideous thing, and he cannot face his girlfriend, Julie Hastings (Fargo's Frances McDormand). He does however still have the skin making equipment undamaged, so he makes skin that looks like people that ruined him, and he wants revenge on them. He seems at first to be a stressed kind of man, more like an anti-hero, but he does have good in him. He calls himself Darkman at the end when he has Bruce Campbell's face on. Also starring Ted Raimi as Rick. Good!
What no plot summary of Darkman can provide is how much director Raimi ("The Evil Dead") brings to the party. In addition to giving us a conflicted hero - more disturbed than Batman - Raimi fills every action sequence and even routine plot scenes with fresh images that reflect his Darkman's rage. According to Bruce himself at a UK convention in March 2008, he was never down for the role. He did confirm however that he supplied much of the voice work. The European DVD has a small cut due to it being distributed in the UK, where the BBFC used to have a problem with the depiction of certain Asian weapons in movies. It is hard to say. There is a shot that establishes where the line is and shows that Westlake is already standing very close to it when he gets there, so it is possible that he crossed it on the last throw when he knocked the bottles down and not realized it. If Westlake was paying attention, the fact that he is so certain that he did not cross the line would set the interpretation that the guy at the stand really was trying to cheat him. While both interpretations involve the aspect of his inability to control his temper making Westlake/Darkman more unpredictable, dangerous and susceptible to violence; only the one in which the guy actually cheated Westlake would involve him getting what he deserves when Westlake beats him up. Bottom line, if you want to believe that the scene's only purpose was to put further focus on Westlake's growing instability, then he did cross the line (though either way, the underlying meaning is there).
