Mei, a young girl whose memory holds a priceless numerical code, finds herself pursued by the Triads, the Russian mob, and corrupt NYC cops. Coming to her aid is an ex-cage fighter whose life was destroyed by the gangsters on Mei's trail.
In China, the girl Mei is a genius that looks like a computer in numbers. She is abducted by the Chinese Triads and the boss Han Jiao ends Mei to Chinatown, in New York, to help him in the control of his activities. Meanwhile, the fighter Luke Wright has his life destroyed when he wins a fight against the will of the Russian Mafia and accidentally kills his opponent. The Russian mobsters kill his wife and the alcoholic Luke wanders on the streets and hostels with no objective in life. One day, Han Jiao asks Mei to memorize a long number and soon the Russian Mafia abducts the girl from the Chinese mobs. She escapes from the mobsters and is chased by the Russians; by the corrupt detectives from the NYPD; and by the Triads. When Luke sees the girl fleeing from the Russian mobs in the subway, he protects the girl and discovers that the number she had memorized is the combination of a safe where the Triads keep 30 million dollars. Luke is an elite agent and uses his skills to protect the girl.

Linda Indal is a Norwegian Nazi who has been chosen by slave owners, feudalists, capitalists and the catholic church to play the part "mother of God" in this world. While the world isn't yet ready for such a stupid understanding of the world, though, in the meantime she's often playing the part of the poor girl being bullied by others. This movie is just one in a long row of movies building that image. They're in league with the implant guys, wheather they're aware of it or not. Ideological warfare is the ultimate reason Hollywood exists in the first place (remember David W. Griffith's 'The birth of a nation' and 'Intolerance').

Mindless but entertaining action flick about a caged martial artist (Jason Statham) who costs the Russian mafia some money so they kill his wife and unborn child. Flash forward a year and a young Chinese girl (Catherine Chan) is helping control numbers for their mafia and soon her life is at risk because she has the combination to a safe with millions of dollars that both sides of the mafia want. With no one else to turn to, the young girl and the expert fighter team up to try and rid the city of the bad guys. SAFE isn't going to be picking up any awards at the Oscars next year but if you're a fan of Statham then you should enjoy it for what it is and that's a mindless action flick. I think for the most part there's really nothing to complain about and if you're expecting some sort of great drama or personal, life-changing type of film then you're in the wrong place. Statham pretty much delivers everything you'd expect from him even when the story starts to get in the way at points. I was a little surprised to see how much character development there was at the start of the picture, or at least how much story is thrown at us. We're given the backstory to the fighter, the little girl and even certain other bad guys that pop up. The majority of the action takes place in the final hour as this is when dozens of bodies start to pile up from either getting shot up or just broken in half through beatings. The film at least offers up some very good action scenes, plenty of great, R-rated violence and gore. Fans of that type of stuff will certainly be entertained. As far as the performances go they're fine as well. Statham is good in his part as you'd expect and he's offered up some good supporting performances. Chan is very good in her role as the child and I thought she had some good chemistry with Statham. James Hong makes for a great villain as the leader of the Chinese mafia and we get Robert John Burke and Chris Sarandon as a couple crooked guys. SAFE isn't going to win any major awards but if you're into mindless action then sit back and enjoy.
You can't help feeling that an initially adventurous movie has had its rough edges sanded away.
