15 Feb 2017 What's the difference between a ballistic missile and a cruise missile? Learn more about missiles in this HowStuffWorks Now article.
An intercontinental ballistic missile trajectory consists of three parts: the powered flight portion; the free-flight portion, which constitutes most of the flight time; and the re-entry phase, where the missile re-enters the Earth's atmosphere. When in space no more thrust is provided, the missile enters free-flight.
9 Oct 2017 A ballistic missile is launched directly into the high layers of the earth's atmosphere. It travels well outside the atmosphere and then the warhead detaches and falls back to earth. Since it depends on gravity to reach its target, it's called a ballistic missile. A cruise missile does exactly what its name says.
Ballistic missiles can be launched from ships and land based facilities. For example, Prithvi I, Prithvi II, Agni I, Agni II and Dhanush ballistic missiles are currently operational in the Indian defence forces. top. On the basis of Launch Mode: (i) Surface-to-Surface Missile: A surface-to-surface missile is a guided projectile
Fact Sheet: Ballistic vs. Cruise Missiles. Ballistic missiles are powered initially by a rocket or series of rockets in stages, but then follow an unpowered trajectory that arches upwards Cruise missiles are self-guided and use multiple methods to accurately deliver their payload, including terrain mapping, global positioning
6 Dec 2010 A ballistic missile is used to hit a predetermined target. Its trajectory can roughly be divided into two phases. It is launched in such a way that it burns most of its fuel to attain the desired velocity in the first phase called the boost phase. The missile can only be guided during the powered phase of flight.
A ballistic missile is one which flies in a ballistic trajectory. Cruise missiles are essentially guided flying bombs - unmanned heavier than air aircraft capable of sustained, powered flight from launch until it reaches the target. They range in speed from subsonic to supersonic.
