Airwolf is the most sophisticated helicopter imaginable (flies halfway round the world, outruns jet planes). Stringfellow Hawke is its pilot, essentially blackmailing a secret US agency into finding his brother (lost in Vietnam) while he flies dangerous assignments for "The Firm."
As part of a deal with an intelligence agency to look for his missing brother, a renegade pilot goes on missions with an advanced battle helicopter.
What an awful series. Every plot was completely unbelievable. The helicopter possessed supernatural/physics defying capabilities. It could outrun jets and perform impossible maneuvers. If they were going to go the route of "make believe," why not just make the chopper a space ship and allow it to time travel? Was Spock not available? Don't even get me started on the acting. I liked this show better when it was called "Miami Vice Flies a Helicopter." Ernest Borgnine is about as believable in his role as Jan Michel Vincent's retarded side kick as was William Conrad's obese butt running down athletic felons as Frank Cannon. Why Borgnine even considered making this series is a mystery in and of itself. Poor Ernest Borgnine. The cancer came too late to save him from this atrocity.
I just watched the pilot of this series on DVD yesterday. Good action, decent acting and an interesting premise. JM Vincent was a good fit as the brooding, tough Stringfellow Hawke. Also, I think the production value is pretty good. It doesn't seem cheesy, even now over 25 years later. I thought it would appear hokey and cheesy, but was pleasantly surprised. The scenery around Hawke's cabin is very nice. This must have been shot in northern California or Oregon, Maybe Washington state. Also, It's interesting to be reminded that Lybian leader General Quadafi was a thorn in the side of the U.S. even more so in 1984 then he is today. Sure, some of the situations depicted are implausible, but as long as you can suspend disbelief, and go with the flow, you'll enjoy this pilot. Haven't seen the rest of the episodes yet but plan on viewing the entire DVD set for some fun 1980's nostalgia
According to the patches on their uniforms both Stringfellow and St. John Hawke served in the Air Cavalry during the Vietnam War.-It is stated that Stringfellow and St. John Hawke needed a special waiver and permission from their commanding officer, Colonel Vidor, in order to serve in the same unit in Vietnam. This is because of a genuine military regulation dating from the Second World War forbidding family members serving in the same unit in case it affects their tactical judgement and sparing their family the possibility that they could both be killed in the same battle. In Hawke and St. John's case an exception may have been made as they were the only members of their family left.-Dominic Santini served in both World War 2 and the Korean War. According to his stories in World War 2 he flew P47 Thunderbolt fighters in the European theatre and also ferried bombers from the US to North Africa via South America. It was during this time he met and befriended Hawke and St. John's father and helped raise both of his sons after they were orphaned. a5c7b9f00b
