In the 1950s, a new generation of superheroes must join forces with the community's active veterans and a hostile US government to fight a menace to Earth.
Adapting the award-winning DC Comics miniseries DC: THE NEW FRONTIER by Darwyn Cooke, Justice League: The New Frontier spins a tale of the DC Universe in the 1950s, focusing on test pilot Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) and the Martian Manhunter. The story also features other DC characters, including Barry Allen (the Flash), Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and many more.
There's a lot to like about Justice League: The New Frontier, but I'm afraid all of that is counterbalanced by one of the silliest stories I've ever seen in animation.
Set mostly in the 50s and featuring the DC hero fashion of that period the paranoid US government have blackballed all superheroes, claiming that they have something to hide beside their identities and dismiss them as Commies. The Flash is even ridiculed because of his RED costume. But soon they will have to come together again to fight a common enemy when (and I'm not kidding) a large floating, living island of dinosaurs called The Center plans to wipe out humanity.
I've read hundreds of comic books in my life and that is seriously the dumbest crap I have ever heard. Every other part of JL: TNF is far superior to this 'Center' nonsense, so it's such a shame that the main plot drags it down. I especially like the story about the Martian Manhunter and the Flash. Most of the JLA get a look-in but these two have the most substantial plots.
The animation style will be familiar to those who are fans of Warner/DC cartoons such as Batman and the 50s production design creates a nice atmosphere.
But that idiotic plot...
Based on Darwyn Cooke's popular comic book miniseries, this one had potential but ultimately proves to be a failure. The story focuses primarily on Hal Jordan and J'onn J'onzz (Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter respectively). This is a large part of the problem as these two characters, Hal in particular, are not that interesting. A subplot about Hal being a pacifist is just thrown into the story 3/4 of the way through in order to build to a point that I don't think was delivered well. The characters casual viewers will be more familiar with are given the shaft here, with the exception of Batman who is portrayed as annoyingly omniscient. Wonder Woman is treated far worse, looking like a linebacker in drag and fulfilling the bitch cliché to the maximum. Superman is a total pussy who is dismissed unceremoniously before the final battle, only to be rescued after it's over. His haters will certainly like this more than others.
It's not an accessible movie for non-comics fans. If you are not a fan of the comics and have a certain degree of knowledge of DC history, you will be lost when certain characters are brought into the story with no explanation. Another thing is that the villain of the story is lame and poorly defined. It's been a long time since I read the original comics story so I don't remember if it was more fleshed-out but here the villain makes cryptic comments about "the center not holding" throughout the movie, as well as using dinosaurs for some strange reason. If there was an explanation given for any of this, I must have missed it. The animation is crude. Trying to mimic Cooke's art style from the comics works only in still shots, not in the action. The music score is highly irritating and cheap. The voices, assembled from mostly "face" actors, range in quality but for the sake of not looking like I'm piling on complaint after complaint I'll just say they're adequate and let it go at that. It's not a great animated movie. As someone familiar with the source material, I'll give it a middle grade but those unfamiliar will probably not be so generous.
