Maxima, by default, uses gnuplot to produce 2d graphics. If you're using this default, then you need to set the gnuplot_preamble , e.g. plot2d(x, [x,-1,1], [gnuplot_preamble, "set size ratio -1"])$. Note the -1 means that gnuplot tries to set the scales so that the unit has the same length on both axes, while +1
Michael's answer is good, but it does the differentiation everytime g(x) is called. (Also, normally you see it wrapped in a block statement to ensure that y is properly localized). There is a way to force the RHS to evaluate at the time of definition and with the general x . The syntax is (%i1) f(x) := 2*x^4; 4 (%o1)

2 Jun 2015 Maxima is a computer algebra system, implemented in Lisp. Maxima is derived from the Macsyma system, developed at MIT in the years 1968 through. 1982 as part of Project MAC. MIT turned over a copy of the Macsyma source code to the. Department of Energy in 1982; that version is now known as DOE
Maxima, a full featured computer algebra system, now runs on your Android mobile devices. Maxima, and its predecessor Macsyma is one of the most long-established software in the world, back in 1960s at MIT LCS and Project Mac. You can perform many many math operations such as integration, differentiation, matrix
I can use gnuplot within maxima with limited functionality such as not being able to rotate but nowhere can I find the means to run gnuplot by itself. I have tried uninstalling gnuplot. You can also right-click on your menus and select 'Edit' and add it manually or create a launcher on your desktop. Wayne
11 Jul 2007 I have attached a wxMaxima input file as a starting point. Everything These formulas are given in the literature, but at the moment, reproducing them includes some manual substitutions for me. I haven't used any of the following packages but they seem to be what you are looking for: maxima.sourceforge.net/docs/manual/en/maxima_51.html#SEC257 · maxima.sourceforge.net/docs/manual/en/maxima_79.html#SEC369
The offline manuals. Maxima (the program that does do the actual mathematics) and wxMaxima (the graphical user interface) both come with their own documentation that is accessible without the need of having access to the internet. But there is a need both manuals are accessible online, too: The manual wxMaxima
wxMaxima is a graphical user interface (GUI) for the Maxima computer algebra system (CAS). wxMaxima allows to use all of Maxima's functions. In addition, it provides convenient wizards for accessing the most commonly used features. This manual describes some of the features that make wxMaxima one of the most
