SIP POTTING MIX: Put on your Respirator Mask. Mix bottom layer of soil: 1 gallon Vermiculite + 1 gallon Perlite + 3 gallons Peat Moss.* Make sure it is lightly moistened & gently pack it under & around the Drain Pipes. Mix 2 cu ft bag MG Potting Mix with 2 gallons Vermiculite + 2 gallons Perlite + 4 gallons Peat Moss.
I read on blogs and websites, that for sub-irrigation planters, I should use potting mixes, not soil, since it facilitates the wicking action to bring water to the surface. It's the cheapest I could find. I'm going to trust in it's quality for the time being. If things don't work out this season, I'll invest in more expensive soil next year.

17 Aug 2015 I didn't think to find the name of the grower who supplied these planters. It is most likely someone in the local Southern California area. Kudos to the grower for doing an outstanding job of design and installation. All garden centers should be so lucky to have planters like these for salewith sub-irrigation
These are also called SIP – Sub Irrigation Planter – I grow all my indoor plants this way and here's why. Many interior plant professionals (plantscapers) use subirrigation planters, pots or containers as their preferred method of watering.
