MACHINERY'S REFERENCE SERIES. EACH NUMBER IS. ONE UNIT IN. A COMPLETE LIBRARY OF. MACHINE DESIGN AND SHOP PRACTICEREVISED AND. REPUBLJSHED FROM MACHINERY. NUMBER 107. DROP-FORGING DIES. AND. DIE-SINKING. By CHESTER L. LUCAS and J. WILLIAM JOHNSON.
3.1Forging die design: The first step in the design of a drop-forging die is the decision regarding parting plane and what impressions are necessary to achieve the necessary fiber flow direction to obtain the requisite strength. Normally, fullering, edging, blocking and finishing impressions are necessary. 3.2 Parting plane:.
Open Die Forging. • Hot forging for relatively roughly shaped workpieces. • Use simple processes like upsetting and flattening. (cogging) to shape workpieces. • Simple . Die Design. • Parting lines are usually at the largest cross section. • Flash specifications: • Flash clearance should be 3% of maximum forging thickness.
14 Sep 1992 forging load or not. This metal flow simulation and die design piocess has been applied to two closed die forging examples, one in plane-stiam condition and the othei m axisymmetric condition. The results .. These relations have been analyzed by the Drop Forging Research Association (DFRA). [13,14]
Drop Forging. Design. This Paper was presented at the NADFS/IProdE. Seminar on "Drop Forging for Modern. Manufacture," held at Nottingham on April. 15-16, 1970. THIS Paper endeavours to put forward some of the considerations which go into the design of good drop forgings as produced within closed impression dies
Lublin, Poland. The results of theoretical and experimental analysis of hammer forging process of lever drop forging from AZ31 magnesium alloy are presented in this paper. In order to design a process guaranteeing obtaining a proper product, ing by means of forging on die hammer without special devices for tools
2.2 DROP FORGING DIE DESIGN Factors to be considered i) Number of Impressions • Number of impressions or stages necessary to achieve the required flow direction so as to obtain requisite strength. • Normally fullering or rollering, edging and finishing impressions are necessary. • If required, then other impressions like

Hot forging, also referred to as drop forging, is a process that can be used to produce a wide variety of die forging. In open-die forging a series of relatively simple dies is used to form the final forging incrementally with a large number of blows. This process is largely a more . important part of the forging process design.
