Two young Americans with special abilities must race to find a girl in Hong Kong before a shadowy government organization called Division does.
In Hong Kong, the "mover" Nick Gant is contacted by the "watcher" Cassie Holmes to seek out the "pusher" Kira Hollies. She has just escaped from the Division, a shadowy governmental agency that chases the youngsters with abilities. When the trio is reunited, they join to other persons with ability to fight against the "pusher" Henry Carver and his men.
I generally watch films before reading comments because of how tainted they can be sometimes. It works more often then not.
I am flabbergasted at the comments about this film. Almost every single bad review goes on a two paragraph rant about the story being confusing and muddled. I don't see a single string of validity in this statement and can only assume that the reviewer has not seen the film or is more on par with story lines like "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle."
The whole story is very easy to follow and understand until a certain point. Closing in on the climax, a series of events unfolds that are a mystery to everyone in the film...and guess what? They are supposed to be a mystery to us as the watcher as well. We find out things as the cast finds out things - and then there is a resolution. I am shocked that the majority of people can not grasp this basic concept. I and the others that went to see the movie followed everything just fine.
It is true that PUSH is not the greatest written work ever and that it borrows a LOT from pop culture in reference to the supernatural - but that is expected. Tons of other good films do it as well.
This film also does a fine job being original. The director had a vision and translated its gritty, colorful, and sometimes beautiful nature across the screen well. The decision to shoot in China was a wonderful choice, and the footage was treated with honesty and creativity.
Let me offer some advice to other "reviewers" - never try to hyper analyze a film the first time you watch it. Analyzation of film needs to be left for the second and third viewings. And maybe this film will not hold up on multiple viewings and maybe it will, but while you are trying desperately analyze everything on screen you miss most of what is good about the movie.
This film is another one of those certain cases where the trailer makes the film look way better than it actually is. I saw that one trailer for it in front of, I think, Valkrie(did I spell that right? I don't care anyway) and I thought "Hmm, I should go see that." Well, I didn't get to see it in theaters, but when it came out on DVD and Blu-ray(the version I got) I finally got around to seeing it. Thank god I didn't see it in theaters.
Summit Entertainment, makers of the famous Twilight, are responsible here, and this film has the main problem that Twilight had: the worst editing in the world. That was the main film's problem, the editing. To be fare, it's decent in SOME spots, but everywhere else it's just god-awful. Most of the time, the editing is responsible for the film's other problem: a confusing-as-hell storyline.
The storyline includes so many twists and turns as well as an over-complicated back story that you can't understand what the f*ck is happening and why, with you trying to understand what's going on right in front of you because the editing makes what's right in front of your face impossible to see. The film has some not so flashy effects to cheer it up, with flashy effects being the savior of many films. Sadly, this film is not blessed with a single good-looking effect. While the actors are decent, the camera angles make them look awful, with it being incredibly obvious that Dakota Fanning has never gotten drunk in her entire life making her character as useless DVD copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The only good thing about this movie is the opening credits, with an, honestly, cool narration by Dakota. Bottom line, you know how the end of trailers for actions and horrors always end with a fast montage to hype you up? You do? Well, imagine a hyper-edited trailer with 24 different camera angles for one person being the entire film and you have Push(2009), another box-office bomb by Summit Entertainment.
Push has a cool, sinewy style, energy to burn.
Push is based on a screenplay written by screenwriter David Bourla. There are nine types of psychics in Push: (1) Movers, (2) Pushers, (3) Watchers, (4) Bleeders, (5) Sniffs, (6) Shifters, (7) Wipers, (8) Shadows, and (9) Stitchers. Movers manipulate inanimate objects at varying distances. The actual technique is known as kinetic signature control, where the Mover is trained to hear and identify the specific atomic frequency of any given material and alter the gravity wave around it, usually producing the nearby air to appear warped. Advanced Movers can work at the molecular level creating protective shields in the air around them. Pushers push specific thoughts, memories, and even emotions into their targets. This technique can be used to gain a subject's trust or to have them perform any action, thinking it was their own agenda. Watchers are trained to self-induce visions of the future, very much like a prolonged sense of déjà vu. The technique of following the future, either of a person or object, is called subject tracking. A Watcher's skill is primarily rated by how far they can see into the future. Bleeders have the ability to emit high-pitched sonic vibrations that cause ruptures in a target's blood vessels. Sniffs are highly developed psychometrics who can track the location of either people or objects over varying distances. Like psychic bloodhounds, their tracking ability is increased if they have tactile access to an object that has been in direct contact with the subject. Sniffs receive information based on images, not specific addresses, which is why identifiable landmarks help increase their effectiveness. Shifters can temporarily shift patterns of light on any object to create illusions to the naked eye. They work mostly on a touch basis, but once the illusion is established, it remains with the object for short periods of time. For example, a Shifter could momentarily touch a one dollar bill, altering its light pattern to appear as a one hundred dollar bill for hours until the effect expires. The length of the shift is based on experience and ability. Wipers are skilled at either temporary or permanent memory erasure, an invaluable asset in espionage. Experience will dictate the accuracy of their wipes, though the danger is always present that they will eliminate a desired memory. Shadows are trained to block the vision of other clairvoyants such as Sniffs, making any subject within their target radius appear "dark". Experience will enhance the size of the area they can shadow and the intensity of their shielding effect. Shadows need to be awake to perform their ability, and it is common for a detail of two Shadows to operate in shifts while protecting a person or object for extended periods. Stitchers are psychic surgeons trained to quickly reconstruct cells to their previous or healthy state. Using only their hands, they can heal and even "unheal" whatever they have done. For more detailed work, Stitches use a silver based cream on their hands which acts as a conductor to their ability. a5c7b9f00b
