We found that the use of the nomenclature of Bergey's Manual (8th edition) to identify these strains by species was not adequate. DNA homology values supported the formation of Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus separate from Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

SPECIES. Staphylococcus arlettae; Staphylococcus aureus; Staphylococcus auricularis; Staphylococcus capitis; Staphylococcus caprae; Staphylococcus carnosus Frequently, non-human primates carry large populations of S . aureus in the nares and on the skin. Staphylococcus spp. Streptococcus spp. Enterococcus spp. Micrococcus spp. Staphylococcus spp. Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus spp. Micrococcus spp. Micrococcus spp.

Usually unencapsulated or limited capsule formation. DNA G+C content (mol%): 27–41 (Tm, Bd). Type species: Staphylococcus aureus
The latter species is now named Staphylococcus epidermidis. Although more than 20 species of Staphylococcus are described in Bergey's Manual (2001), only Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are significant in their interactions with humans. S. aureus colonizes mainly the nasal passages, but it may
