Valve Guide Removal - Posted by SteveY. Valve guide can be accomplished with hand tools very easily. I use a piece of 1" sanding belt and shoe-shine the guide to clean it. I heat the head with hand torch, in oven, lay in the sun for 2 hours on a 100 degree day, etc. (Hell, I confess, sometimes I just go for it with no heat).
17 Mar 2017 To remove the valve guides it is first necessary to heat the cylinder head. The aluminum head will expand approximately twice as fast as a cast iron valve guide, therefore, although the head and guide may be heated at the same time, the guide will effectively loosen as the head warms.

Valve guides in an aluminum cylinder head eventually wear out, leading to excessive oil burning. Oil leaks down the space between valve shaft and guide. Furthermore, a worn guide puts excessive side pressure on the rocker arm and camshaft, if it's an overhead cam. This will lead to premature wear on the rocker arm
Many builders don't have the correct equipment to properly remove and install valve guides, so they use force instead. Hammering an old guide out of a head can score and damage the head so as to not have a nice surface for the new guide. We have seen people with a guide they try to force out shatter, so then they end

5 Apr 2012 How to Change Valve Guides In a 4G63 Cylinder Head The first thing is to remove the valves, springs, retainers and locks. The guides are cracked from the bent valves (Sorry about the pic,) The tools needed for this is an air hammer, a regular hammer, venire calipers, and the proper sized guide driver.
