Converting PDF to Excel and Retain Formatting. I am trying to convert a PDF to an Excel file. I just launched the free test version of Adobe Acrobat X Pro (version 10.1.3) and opened a newly created PDF. I clicked on the following: File > Save As > Spreadsheet > XML Spreadsheet 2003 (have Office 2003).
You probably won't encounter such problems very frequently as long as you don't work with obscure file formats that aren't supported by Excel. There is, however, one big exception to this rule. This is a particular file format whose data is not that easy to bring into Excel despite being very popular and widely used: PDF.
If the data in PDF is in a table you might be able to use apache's pdfbox with some c#/vb to convert the PDF into an excel sheet. I use pdfbox to read a PDF table and stuff it into an XML file for word automation. I say might because there are different sub types of pdfs that can cause some issues. Edit for Link
When I convert (office 2007) Excel to pdf, the conversion is succesful, but the pdf file is all messed up, the format is lost on conversion. I'm sure there are issues that originate at Microsoft and maybe this is partly one of them but the fact of the matter is that Acrobat is not able to produce a correct document
When I convert the pdf to excel, some of the data is merged into multliple cells rather than columns. Any difference in format, such as having $10.00.
11 Oct 2010 I was trying to save the the text and format of a pdf that was organized in a table. In Acrobat Professional, I realized there is a 'Save As' option that allows saving as an excel document. This worked well for my needs. I also noticed there is a Save As Word document option as well. I didn't try it though.
