The story The Beginner's Guide told about showing off an artist's work without their permission and ruining a friendship feels like an authentic one, and that's part of what makes it such a great game. By making himself the narrator, he personalizes The Beginner's Guide in a powerful way. You're lead to believe what he's saying in the game might be true.
