In July 2004, the Subcommittee on Hyperbilirubinemia of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published its clinical practice guideline on the management of hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn infant ?35 weeks of gestation,1 and a similar guideline was published in 2007 by the Canadian Paediatric Society.

RECOMMENDATION 7.3: In breastfed infants who require phototherapy (Fig 3), the AAP recommends that, if possible, breastfeeding should be continued (evidence quality C: benefits exceed harms). This can reduce bilirubin levels and/or enhance the efficacy of phototherapy63–65(evidence quality B: benefits exceed harms).
