20 Apr 2006 Where can I get 100% tung oil? I am tired of the newer Formby's "TUNG OIL 'Finish' ", which seems to have more varnish than oil. I have used the older Formby's for > 20 years, but I cannot get the newer stuff from Home Depot on correctly without too much shine; even the so-called "satin" finish. On a side
I have used Formby's Tung Oil Finish for years since it is readily available at the local home improvement store and is easy to use. Thing about most oil film finishes including shellac can thin with proper solvent and wipe on first coat and let dry; sand to level before apply full coats to get faster build of
15 Jan 2006 After staining which I have already done, the instructions call for tung oil to be applied to seal the wood followed by Tru-Oil. Confused, I Googled "gunstock finishing" and a couple of references really blasted tung oil saying it was more trouble than linseed oil, that it NEVER DRIED?! Have any of you used
If you want a shinier more built up surface use Tru-Oil. If not, use one of the other penetrating oil finishes like Formby's Tung or Watco Danish Oil. None of these are pure oils, they're all basically wipe-on varnishes. I've found it easier to build up a nice glossy finish with Tru-Oil if that's what you're going for.
I am trying to decide how I want to finish a bass and I really like the look of an oil finish. I have read some of the other posts on TB on finishing with Oil, but there didn't seem to be a clear cut difference between Danish Oil and Tung Oil. (I know Formby's is a blend BTW) Anyone A/B'ed them side by side?
Hello, I have finished gun stocks and furniture with both Formby's Tung Oil Finish (high gloss) and Tru Oil. It's been 20+ years since I've Since they are both varnishes, are they compatible (i.e. if I start off with Formby's and don't like it can I let it cure, lightly sand, and apply Tru Oil over it)? Any comments re:
4 Jan 2010 I need to finish my CBU and it's either Formby's tung oil which I can get locally or Tru Oil if I wanna drive a while. The CBU is spruce, spanish cedar and poplar. Which do you guys think is best and why? I have a can of spray shellac too. Also do any of you CBU makers a the wah effect when you rock the
That's the one thing that has always shied me away from using Tru-Oil A thinner finish will allow for better penetration into the wood than a thick one. Even "old" Formby's Tung oil starts to get a little thicker than I like and I will cut it with a little turpentine to keep it about the same consistency as when it's
Anyhow, based on some cursory reading and youtube-ing I thought I wanted to use Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil. But after a trip through my local paint & hardware store I realized I could either A) go with Formby's Tung Oil, 2) go with MiniWax Wipe-On Poly, or 3) find another paint & hardware store that actually

Given enough Dragonman, Tru-Oil is a linseed oil gun stock finish with Japan dryers and other additives. It is more of i like HOMER FORMBYS TUNG OIL
