Civil Unrest in the European country of Moldova has US forces engaging the insurgents however there is a new threat who has decided both are their enemy. This new threat resides in an alternative spectrum that makes them invisible to the naked eye and instant death to anyone confronting them. Locals believe they are Spirits of War but others believe they are superior arms technology fabricated by the Moldova government.. The first half of the film is fine, decent action, intriguing mystery, but once the mystery is resolved and we find out what the monsters are all that hard work just goes 'parp' in a sad little cloud of gas. Because that's what the monsters are, super-cooled, extremely diffuse gas, in a state that wouldn't last a fraction of a second in any temperature much above absolute zero. A fart could destroy these monsters and yet they're smashing up tanks. A mild toot would render them non-existent in a nanosecond and yet apparently they can only be taken out with plasma weapons. Honestly they should have just made them out of flatulence because that would have been altogether more plausible. This was a real stinker. I liked this, it's got great fx, solid acting, and a new(ish) twist on a classic scifi trope. American spec-ops soldiers are fighting in a near-future civil war in a random Central European country. Weird deaths start happening to both sides - strange images are caught on the Americans' helmet cams. An expert weapons engineer from DARPA is sent to analyse the images before the brass is told anything. He goes into the field to get some more images on a more advanced camera, tagging along with a Delta team looking for a team that's been captured, and an intelligence officer who thinks it's cloaking tech and wants some. But it ain't cloaking tech - the evil government has poured billions into weapons research and unleashed something way nastier. Hijinks ensue. The plot is a bit predictable (there are similarities to Alien/Aliens, but also the old 50's pulp fiction scifi mags), but well handled and the action sequences roll the story along well. The square evac scene and the final battle at the power plant have some particularly nice big bada-booms. The seemingly effortless way weapons are made and retrofitted for fighting the new enemy is a little on the nose, but it's internally logical and based on some actual science (not made up pseudoscience). The creatures are pretty creepy looking, and their origin is internally consistent too, and kinda icky. I would have liked the female character to be a bit more fleshed out, or to have more females in the cast, but given most of the characters were spec-ops soldiers I spose that would have been difficult without being super obvious and awkward.
