From unique debut methods and unusual promotion tactics, 2NE1 and “conventional" clearly do not belong in the same sentence. This includes their success in terms of winning awards; winning their first one even before their official debut (with their Cyworld April Song of the Month win for Lollipop with Big Bang).
It was with “Fire", which had only been performed four times AND available only digitally, that 2NE1 won the first of what would be numerous awards from SBS Inkigayo on their 28th day after debut. Who could forget CL being at a loss for words, Bom and Minji adorably trying to fight back tears of happiness and how brightly Dara smiled as they received the trophy for their first win? That was one memory that would be eternally etched in Blackjacks’ hearts.
Despite winning more than 20 awards in 2009, one award was particularly special as it was another first for the girls (and for Kpop in general). 2NE1′s “Song of the Year" win at the 2009 MAMAs for “I Don’t Care" was the very first time a rookie group won a Daesang (i.e. one of the major awards at award shows, the other 2 being Album of the Year and Artist of the Year). And that was our 2NE1, breaking records from the get-go. Who said it was impossible for a rookie group to win a Daesang? I don’t care eh eh eh eh eh~
With the 2011 tactic of promoting ALL the songs off their 2nd mini-album prior to the physical album release, 2NE1 dominated the digital charts for several months and solidified their position as a hit-maker with the release of each song. Every song, with the exception of Hate You (which was in competition with Miss A’s title track Goodbye Baby Goodbye), achieved a Perfect All Kill aka PAK. Though not their official title song, “I Am The Best" captured the most attention with its infectious beat, intriguing choreography and ever-changing styling. The anthem of the year was definitely Naega jaeil chalaga as the song’s catchy tune and characteristic dance moves caught on with literally everyone, from 2AM’s Jo Kwon to Super Junior’s Eunhyuk. In 2011, 2NE1 broke roofs, smashed their own records (note pun to I Am The Best MV Scene) and made yet another commendable peak in their long record of achievements.
2NE1′s achievements know no bounds. They’ve proven to be extremely popular outside of Korea as well as they won MTV Iggy’s Best New Band late last year, crowned at a concert that the girls headlined in Times Square. The world certainly took notice as they’ve also been nominated for the MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2012.
Best New Band
Though it has only been three short years, 2NE1 has won over 45 awards since their explosive debut, and the list only continues to grow (see full list here). It’s only been three years and it’s still ongoing. 2NE1 JAEIL CHALAGA!!
So Blackjacks, it’s question time again:
