Jockeys are small an pious men Witch knees beneath their chins They ride in attitudes of prayer As if confessing sins And, poised in constant genuflection, They plead for Heavenly protection: "Lord, we consort with stable girls And cheat the Clerk of Scales And we get odds-on favourites stuck Securely on the rails. We know, at times, such human flaws Transgress Divine or temporal laws But, howsoe'er Thy judgement serve us, From zealous stewards, Lord, preserve us".
