Jimmy, Clark Kent and Lana Lang's friend, is ashamed that his father works as a doorman at the Smallville theater. His opinion changes when Superboy is able to thwart a robbery with Jimmy's father's help.
The Adventures of Superboy – 1961 This was the pilot for a series that was not picked up by the networks. John Rockwell plays the high school student, Clark Kent (Superboy) character in this attempt to reel in the crowd that made the George Reeves' Superman show, a hit.

The local Smallville movie theatre is having a movie premier and part of the opening, is, a display of $200,000 in diamonds. Needless to say this draws the attention of a trio of crooks.

One of crooks takes pot shots at a Police car, which draws the Police away from watching the jewels. The other two gunmen toss a sleeping gas bomb to knock out the guards watching the diamonds. One of the theatre doormen however sees the crooks before he passes out.

Superboy was busy putting the grip on the swine shooting at the Cops. By the time he gets back to Smallville, the crooks are long gone.

Working off the description of the crooks given by the doorman, some drawings are made. Superboy also has a quiet talk with the gunman prisoner about the diamond robbery.

Using his old x-ray vision as a lie detector, Superboy soon discovers that the 3rd gunman was part of the robbery. Superboy has the Police publish the drawings in the local paper. He figures this well draw the crooks out in an effort to bump off the only witness.

This of course works and the gunmen soon come a calling. When Superboy steps in front of their oncoming auto, the crooks speed up and attempt to run him over. We all know how that ends. The gunmen are pulled out of the wrecked car and handed off to the boys in blue.

Also in the cast are Ray Walker, Bunnie Henning, Stacy Harris, Charlie Maxwell and True Ellison.

The director of little ditty was, George Blair. Blair was a longtime fixture at Republic Pictures. He cranked out quite a lot of b film westerns, crime and film noir. Some of his films include, EXPOSED, POST OFFICE INVESTIGATOR, UNMASKED, FEDERAL AGENT AT LARGE, INSURANCE INVESTIGATOR and LONELY HEART BANDITS. His TV work included helming 27 episodes of the Reeves' ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN. (b/w)
"The Adventures of Superboy" is a pilot episode for a television series that was never approved by the networks. It is available to see on YouTube (as are quite a few other failed pilots) and it's surprisingly good considering it was ultimately a failure.

John Rockwell plays the title character. He is pretty much the Superboy you'd expect--living in Smallville and dating Lana. The crimes he has to contend with are two which are related--an attack on a police car by an armed gunman and the robbery of some jewels at a local theater. Helping Superboy and the police is the doorman at the theater...a man whose son had been a bit ashamed of him because of his seemingly lowly job. By the end, of course, all is right and the boy has gained greater respect for good old dad.

The only serious flaw in the show was a problem with the plot. Supposedly the gunman shooting at the police car was a diversion and both his gang leader AND the cops said that the most they could charge him with was 'malicious mischief' and he'd get 6 months! Umm....he shot at a cop AND Superboy and so attempted murder and 10- 20 years would be more like it!! Otherwise, well made AND entertaining...and a profound loss that more were never made.
