We've both been driving manual transmissions our whole lives and like being more connected to the car and road that way, plus it adds a bit of 'fun' to driving. Also, I read unofficially that the manual transmission AWD split is 50/50 vs 60/40 for the CVT. I'm assuming that a 50/50 power split has advantages

The CVT is. I'm too much an enthusiast for the CVT, and don't have plans to stay stock (planning on E85, turboback, custom tune, wheels and coilovers) so the manual was my only option. But for you, go CVT and don't look back. Subaru makes really good ones, it's leagues better than the DSG from say VW.
