Scientist Clayton Forrester and Sylvia Van Buren are the first to arrive at the site of a meteorite crash. Soon after, an alien war machine emerges and begins killing at random. The Marines are called in, but they're no match for the aliens' force field. Forrester and Van Buren, however, are able to wound one of the creatures and procure a sample of its blood. They take it to Los Angeles where they hope, through testing, to be able to discover the aliens' weakness.
The Martians unchain a direct assault to our planet, with hundreds of invulnerable ships. The invasion takes place all over the world, and all the major cities are destroyed one after one--even the atomic bomb can't stop them. But if the humans can't beat them, who can? Maybe something MUCH smaller....
Being quite a sci-fi fan for many years, I have seen hundreds of science fiction movies. In my opinion, this is the best ever. War of the Worlds is the only movie I can watch again and again, never get tired of, and always find something new every time I see it.
The special effects are brilliant. The alien aircraft are terrifying, and the cobra-like appearance and sounds of the heat ray are awesome indeed. I first saw this movie as a youngster and was absolutely in awe of the realism of the alien invasion. Now a gray-haired old coot, I still feel some of that awe every time I see this film.
What should we expect if we are invaded by beings with technology capable of carrying an invasion force across space? Independence Day answers the question one way - War of the Worlds provides a different answer. You'll just have to watch it to see if we win.
My final thought on this classic film is that the acting is superb. Everyone is bigger than life: the scientist; the student; the general; the colleagues; the priest. I thank them for taking so seriously this far-fetched tale of a Martian invasion.

This '50s adaptation of the H. G. Wells novel transplants the action from Victorian-era Britain to a contemporary Los Angeles, doing away with the mechanical tripods in favour of hovering alien ships with heat-rays designed to evaporate the enemy. As a fine example of '50s-era science fiction, there's little to dislike here, as it's a film that set the template for many other alien invasion flicks to come: there's a chisel-jawed hero (singer Gene Barry), a pretty heroine, an indomitable foe and absolutely tons of destruction rendered in a loving fashion.
I can't help but feel that producer George Pal had a big influence on this film. From watching Pal's later movies as director, it's clear that he was blessed with two qualities: first a sense of imagination, which led him to make all manner of films with wondrous subject matters (such as ATLANTIS, THE LOST CONTINENT and my personal favourite, THE TIME MACHINE), and second a real command of special effects and an ability to integrate them into the storyline. The special effects in WAR OF THE WORLDS are wonderful and still hold up today, and the snake-like heads of those alien ships were still enough to provoke a shudder or two in this viewer.
Spielberg made the inevitable remake but that film – alternatively ponderous, sentimental and stupid – can't hold a torch to this well-remembered classic.
Corona, California, about 50 miles south-southeast of Los Angeles proper. Corona is in Riverside County near where Interstate 15 and route 91 now interesect. Neither highway was there at the time: just the old US 395. Corona was mainly ranches, farms, and woods at the time.
