Max Payne is a undercover agent and detective in DEA who left and joined NYPD. He is out for revenge of murder of his family along with Mona Sax (damsel in distress) who is after same person who killed her sister. It is loosely based on Max Payne game.
Three years ago, NYPD detective Max Payne's wife and baby were murdered. Max gets himself transferred to the cold case office where he can continue searching for the killer who got away. He's a loner, but two people reach out to him during a fateful week: Alex, his ex-partner who may have found a clue, and BB, the security chief at the pharmaceutical company where Max's wife worked. Meanwhile, bodies are piling up, some as a result of a drug on the street that is highly addictive and, for many who take it, brings hideous hallucinations. When one of the bodies is a woman Payne was the last to see alive, her sister comes looking for him armed to the teeth; Max must move fast.
All right, as you can see by the 2 out of 10 note I gave it, the movie really didn't fit my long expectation... it was frustrating! The main reason of disliking John Moore's work here is that very feel elements were really taken from the amazing original history of the game: the cop who opens his revenge path through all the underground crime scene till reach the head of the rotten organization is converted just in a sad police officer who just knows to blame life for his pain - Max Payne is really in pain, but despite of the "dressed-in-black-depressive" played by Wahlberg, the game shows us a tough guy, who ins't afraid to pull the trigger and has awesome quotes! The comic book language was also totally ignored and left aside. The movie could be really much more interesting if it had adopted some narrative and included some of Payne's irony in its lines. Everything is too much "gothic" and "dark".
Other negative point are the characters roles: a really mess!!! And where is Vladimir Lem? Or the mob family leader Don Punchinello, who sends his guys to kill Payne over the game?
I can't forget to talk about the "bullet time"... it's very, very poor! Could be much better! Good points? Yeah: the never ending snow in the city was well executed.
In the end my biggest complain is really about the history - the game one is much better!!!
Strictly speaking from the technical/production aspects of Max Paynae, the movie is stunning. Jonathan Sela (director of photography) truly does a phenomenal job at presenting a dark, gritty, and grim world in true noir style. What stands out the most to me in this sense mainly comes from the outdoor locational scenes. Whether it be on the docks of New York city, completely with spots of flood lighting to accentuate shadows, or in the snowy downtown alleys in which light and dark plays a key role in presenting the films strong mood, everything is beautiful.
So in this sense Max Payne excels at at not only capturing the "feel" of the game, but also in simply presenting a stellar noir piece in terms of atmosphere and style. Other than this, the move sadly fails to deliver anything memorable or impressive.
In terms of casting, there were definitely a few mistakes. Most noteworthy is Ludicrous who, and I'm sorry if anyone else thinks otherwise, just absolutely DOES NOT fit the tone of this film. He feels so out of place that regardless of the stunning cinematography or phenomenal lighting/atmosphere of the sce

In terms of casting, there were definitely a few mistakes. Most noteworthy is Ludicrous who, and I'm sorry if anyone else thinks otherwise, just absolutely DOES NOT fit the tone of this film. He feels so out of place that regardless of the stunning cinematography or phenomenal lighting/atmosphere of the scene around him, the gritty/dark is shattered by the mere fact he is there. This simply comes occurs because of, in my opinion, the style of acting he chose to employ for the character of Jim Bravura is just not fitting for a film of this style. Maybe he was in fact trying to go for the character of a tough, grizzled investigator but I'm sad to say he does not pull it off. He's just not believable in the role and regardless of his confidence in line delivery, it shows.

In terms of plot it is overall decent. There is a very clear story arch and the narrative is rather straight forward so comprehension of whats going on isn't overly difficult to grasp. The problem arises in pacing and repetition. At its core, the story presented by the film is rather simple, and yet the narrative takes a large amount of time to "investigate" plot points that the audience may have already figured out (I say this because nothing was surprising for me and I seemed to figure things out far faster than Max did). Max spends a good hour or more learning about the drug Valkyrie, the tests on soldiers, his wife's murder and discovering those responsible when really not that much time is needed. Sure he has to link things together but the clues he stumbles across and information Mona learns make the revelations of the secrets glaringly obvious to the audience well before the investigation is concluded. As a result, when the "reveal" occurs it isn't exciting or shocking (with the exception of one surprise). It's more of a "oh NOW he finally gets it, about time Max." Due to this pacing, when the action FINALLY comes to fruition it is quick and far from satisfying. I personally believe that this is the fault of the films trailer which insinuates that the film will be "action packed". Here's this trailer with bullets flying, scenery exploding, bodies flying into walls, and giant winged hallucinations but when the film gets underway it is nowhere near as adrenalin pumping as the trailer makes it out to be. While proud supporters of the film may argue that you cant blame a trailer for leading false hopes... that is just not true. Simply put, the trailer for Max Payne leads the viewer to believe they are about to see a grand opus of utterly cool action, hopefully with a decent plot. Instead the film gives a decent plot with mediocre, worn-out, and unfulfilled brief moments of action.

Now you may think otherwise, but this is how I felt about Max Payne. It just wasn't that great. Sure the whole noir style and classic grizzled detective stint was cool but all in all I personally didn't find it flowed well.

In conclusion: While Max Payne is visually and atmospherically stunning, some misfires in casting and poor plot pacing bog the movie down to a mediocre level. Some may like it, others may not. But overall, in my opinion, it was a heartbreaking missed opportunity for a chance at being a stellar noir/action film.
In a post-Matrix, post-John Woo world, a handful of slow-motion shootouts shouldn't be all that's on offer.
Max Payne is based on a 2001 video game of the same name. The video game was adapted for the screen by American screenwriter Beau Thorne. The most common track used is "If I Was Your Vampire" by Marilyn Manson. Yes, although there isn't much of it. While in spirit and tone, the Max Payne film is very similar to the game, many details are changed. Obviously, numerous things are cut because the film runs at about 2 hours, while the play time of the game is much longer

The character Jason Colvin (Chris O'Donnell) is a completely new character added for the film. Max's inner-monologue and "comic book" style narration are almost completely cut, except for minor bits in the beginning and end of the film. Jack Lupino's origin is revealed, as he is portrayed as a "test subject gone mad" in the film. He was given Valkyr as a sort of "super serum" for soldiers in the War on Terror, and, like almost all the other test subjects, eventually went insane. In the game, Jack Lupino dies in the first section, whereas in the film he dies in the final act. Also, in the game, Max kills him, while in the film, he is killed by B.B. Hensley. Nicole Horne does not die in the film.

Unlike in the game, Mona Sax is not hired to kill Max by Nicole Horne. Mona is not wounded or presumably killed as she was in the game. However, a slight reference is made to that game scene in the film, as she is last seen in an elevator. Jim Bravura is no longer the Chief of Police, but instead an Internal Affairs detective, and is turned from an aging police veteran to a young, upstart, and wise cracking detective. All of the dream sequences from the game are cut, and had they not been cut, the film would have most definitely received an "R" rating. Valkyr is explained much more in the film, and displayed on film as a massive hallucinogenic drug, still created by Nicole Horne's company, Aesir. In the film, however, it was a failed "serum" used on soldiers in the War on Terror to make them "fearless". The drug made the test subjects so hungry for more and insane that Aesir was forced to shut down the project, not before Jack Lupino had escaped to the streets. In the film, the hallucinations of the users are mainly demonic angels which "influence" the user's choices, and the drug also turns violent images into peaceful ones, and peaceful images into violent ones. The best way to describe the effects of Valkyr would be that it turns the user into a sort of paranoid schizophrenic.

Also, in the game, Max Payne killed all three men who killed his wife and daughter when he encountered them when he came home from work. In the movie, one of them got away. It is later revealed that B.B. is the third killer. Also, B.B. is a young guy in the game while in the movie, he is an older man. Yes. At the very end of the credits there is a scene between Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, which sets the stage for a possible sequel: Mona shows Max a newspaper that reports Nicole Horn to be the new CEO of Aesyr Corp. The company, against expectations, apparently thrives. One of the harshest critics of the film was 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller, one of the game's producers, who cited fundamental story flaws "that have me shaking my head in bewilderment," including the game's opening scenes being instead placed in the middle of the film. After the film's #1 opening weekend, however, he retracted his comments, saying that he was now "proud of the film," and that "This kind of opening brings us a lot closer to the reality of a sequel," to the long-stalled video game franchise.(wikipedia) In order to achieve the more attractive PG-13-rating for the cinematical release, the film was cut and edited in terms of violence and sexual content as well as drug use. The unrated version was later released on DVD. Yes. When Max arrives at the bar to meet with Mona, the bartender says to Max, "Good to have you back." a5c7b9f00b
