But when she receives a bump on her head, she begins to remember small parts of her previous life as a lethal, top-secret agent. Her old chums in the Chapter are now out to kill her so she enlists the help of a cheap detective named Mitch. As Samantha remembers more and more of her previous life, she becomes deadlier and more resourceful. Both Mitch and Charly proceed to do the killing thing, the bleeding thing and the shooting thing.Saw a comment that began "senseless and useless" and couldn't disagree more. This is a highly entertaining action - adventure. Honestly the time seems to fly by when I'm watching this one ... not really a dull moment.
Geena Davis gives a very credible performance as both Samantha Caine and Charly Baltimore. The viewer is never in doubt that she _is_ both of these women. Great integration of the two personalities by Ms. Davis.
Samuel L. Jackson as her sidekick Mitch is wonderful. A great showing for him and good chemistry between these two actors make the film even better. Jackson's portrayal of Mitch is just right, throughout the film.
Craig Bierko as the enemy turned friend turned enemy gives what is probably one of his best performances. Great screen presence and good chemistry with Geena Davis.
I would recommend this film any time of year, but if you're looking for a different type of Christmas film, this one's for you.SPOILERS
This film sounded like it has a lot going for it: well, an interesting sounding plotline involving an amnesia-suffering ex-governement assassin, Samuel L Jackson and Geena Davies. Ineveitable comparisons to other female action heroes such as Sigourney Weaver's Ripley and Demi Moore's GI Jane are bound to be brought up with this mid-90s dose of another early spin on teh action movie genre. The storyline itself is not so bad..it is the manner in which Renny Harlin directs the action. Whereas Moore and Weaver before her, were clearly masculinised women, Davies seems to be almost intersexual and this comes across as if the director, Davies real life partner, is trying too hard to give the audience something new and radical - a woman who can be both feminine and masculine. When Davies is playing Samantha (mother to a young girl with a happy homelife and a job as a kindergarten teacher), she seems more at ease than when she is playing Charlene (The pre-amnesia governement assassin, asigned to a failed job and then ordered to be killed). Charlie is the total opposite to Samantha and Davies playsa Jekyll and Hyde character whose unpredictability becomes very irritating. Also, there is a certain eroticism of the protagonist. This is demonstrated in the unneccessary shower scenes. I think it is easy to say that HArlin wanted to create the action hero that the characters in Charlies Angels have later come to represent. Women who have boyfriends waiting for them to lcook the dinner at home and do the washing up but also who are able to go out and kick ass as good as any man during the day. But lines such as "Suck my cock", tend to throw all his hard work and effort back in his face. Suchcontradictions suggest that she is actually more man than woman. And when yo usee her breaking the deer's neck near the start of the movie, it almost kicks off with you not having much sympathy for this character. MAybe preferential treatment led to the miscasting of Davies in this role. She is by no means an awful actress but she has certainly been better than this and her acting sometimes borders on the hammy. Samuel L Jackson does better and has some choice lines but the script and the storyline itself does the film no favours. It is definitely entertaining and i did laugh!! Probably not when i should have been, but hey - i watche dit through to the end and that means that it isnt that awful. BUt i think it is one of those iflms that will have gender theorists going mental all over the place!!If you haven't lived until you've heard Geena Davis say "Suck my dick," New Line probably deserves your money.The Long Kiss Goodnight was filmed from a script by American screenwriter Shane Black. The "long kiss goodnight" is a euphemism for death. In the opening narration, when Samantha (Geena Davis) is explaining that the only thing she knows about her former self is a name, Charlene, she says that she has kissed Charlene goodnight. "Focal retrograde amnesia", a type of amnesia where memory for past events and personal information is lost, while the ability to remember new events is spared. Filming took place at multiple locations in the province of Ontario, Canada, e.g., Collingwood, Milton, Hamilton, Markham, Uxbridge, Toronto, and Niagara Falls. Some scenes were filmed at the Windemere House, a resort in Muskoka, Ontario, but when the resort burned down during the filming, they reshot the scenes at another resort, Milford Manor in Milton (Daedalus' hideout). The beginning scenes were shot in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. Other filming locations in the U.S. included Atlantic City in New Jersey, the Chicago Pier, and Linnwood, Washington. It was a CIA plan to detonate a chemical bomb in downtown Niagara Falls on Christmas Eve, killing 4,000 civilians and then blaming Islamic terrorists in order to increase their funding and powers. As Timothy (Craig Bierko) is locking Samantha/Charlene/Charly and her daughter Caitlin (Yvonne Zima) in the freezer, Charly reveals that he is Caitlin's father. Nathan Waldman (Brian Cox) was drowned at the mill, in the same "torture thingy" that Daedalus (David Morse) was using on Samantha/Charley. She unties herself and gets the pistol from his pants while they're both under water.Charly saves the town from the bomb, saves Caitlin, and they both survive the explosion. Hennesey (Samuel L. Jackson) becomes famous for his role in saving the town, goes on the Larry King Show, and is seen by his son and wife, her jaw dropped about a foot-and-a-half. The president asks Charly to return to governmental duty, but she refuses and goes back to being just Sam. In the final scene, however, she can't help from throwing a knife into a log where a cricket was chirping too loudly. One movie recommended by viewers who have seen The Long Kiss Goodnight is The Bourne Identity (2002) (2002), in which an amnesic who was pulled out of the water with bullets in his back searches for clues to his identity. His story is continued in two sequels, The Bourne Supremacy (2004) (2004) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) (2007). For those who appreciate the mixture of high-octane action scenes with witty dialogue, many other action movies written by Shane Black or produced by Joel Silver are highly recommended, such as Lethal Weapon (1987) (and its three sequels), The Last Boy Scout (1991), and Last Action Hero (1993) (which effectively parodies the genre).
