It is a sequel to the prequel but still a prequel to the original which is a remake of Death Race 2000 (a classic!) I enjoy them all! As a Death Race movie, it has all the ingredients: beautiful ladies, sweet cars, guns, explosions, twists. But this time, the race goes to the Kalahari Desert. Great move! It was refreshing to have a new environment. It provided the opportunity to mix things up, add some warlords here and there, maybe cliffs, other stuff! Watching Frankenstein and his signature car rip around always rocks.
The same cast from the previous 2 entries in the series have also returned (the ones that make sense, anyway). Danny Trejo is always fun to watch. Tanit Pheonix is gorgeous and awesome. Luke Goss kicks butt, he rocks as Frankenstein. Ving Rhames is super cool. Dougray Scott plays Niles York, the baddie of the picture. He is one-dimensional, hammy, incredibly unlikable, couldn't wait for something to happen to him yet I enjoyed watching him do his thing. All the actors seemed to be having fun and it's contagious.
Sure, there's some editing issues (ex: navigator battle), bad acting, poor dialogue, plot holes, but hey, I loved it! It was fun, fast, ridiculous, entertaining, over-the-top, and knowingly so. There were some neat surprises throughout the movie, definitely at the end. Won't spoil it but I'll just say it all kind of connects in an interesting way. The makers of DR3:I have an obvious passion for these movies. An effort was made here like with the previous ones and I respect that! If you like Death Race or any other ridiculous, over-the-top, kinda movies, I recommend this one.If you didn't like the original mainstream Death Race or its sequel, don't bother watching this. Now if you liked what the b-movie sequel brought to the table then this movie may be worth watching only to see the loose ends get chained up, literally... while also being slightly hard to watch.
Carl "Frankenstein" Lucas(Luke Goss)is finally able to get out of prison if he wins "one last race" except since the Weyland company is bought out by a whole new boss, Lucas is now expected to perform in a slightly different race with a slim promise of freedom.
All the characters from the prequel are here and while its fun seeing them together there is a lot of cheesy moments where a lot of the tension from the last film is distastefully undone and the audience is left wondering "well what next?."
The main villain is a one dimensional prick. There is a lot of unnecessary use of the F-word in odd dialogue. I mean the dialogue is bad at times. The action is pretty much summed up as South African local ,slo-mo impacts, choppy cuts, some strangely incited explosions, and death... While I can nitpick the movie's logical flaws all day, you can't ignore the bad acting and behaviors of most of the disposable characters. It leaves the audience going "why would ____ do this?" many times over.
Dialogue, concept, and execution are poorly done. The only thing it does right is finally connect the previous films- if not through insane conditions. Its entertaining at least if you turn off your brain and watch the conclusion unfold.If you listen carefully, once York dons the Frankenstein mask, he says one line. But he says it in an American accent. Likely to keep his guise as Frankenstein. It's revealed at the end of this film that Lucas, Katrina and Goldberg make a deal with Weyland, fake their own deaths, escape the prison and are very handsomely rewarded by Weyland but not before burning Niles York and framing him as Frankenstein. While this film ties everything up nicely to lead into Death Race (2008) (2008), the end has Niles York as the new Frankenstein saying, "I am Frankenstein, I will have my revenge," which could be the setup for another prequel sequel. But most likely York is the Frankenstein who is killed on the track in the beginning of the first film. Aside from the unrated version, a censored R-rated cut (rated R for violence and language throughout and sexual content) has been released in the US, too. Contrary to Death Race 2, the R-rated doesn't only lack some trivial nudity footage but also (and mostly) footage with violent content. This doesn't seem to be most widespread version but video store customers better keep their eyes peeled.
