Book descriptionI was very disappointed in this book. Frieds The Passionate Teacher totally shaped my teaching philosophy and I highly recommend that book. This book is just...disappointing. It falls into that category of books that passionately explains what is CURRENTLY wrong and WHY things need to change in education...but offers very, very little practical advice. There also seemed to be a bit of a disconnect for Fried in that he intellectually believes children are naturally curious and engaged with learning and thus wants to encourage a type of teaching/pedagogy/curriculum that would enhance that natural curiosity, yet the examples he gives of when he actually interacts with school-age (say, late elementary/middle school)children they are--to him--disconcertingly resistant to his enthusiasm. I was further put off by the fact that he says more than once that his own education students (Fried is a professor of education at Northeastern) complain that he/the department DID NOT ADEQUATELY PREPARE THEM FOR REAL-LIFE CLASSROOM SITUATIONS.
