In Los Angeles, whilst being chased by police officers, thief Harry Lockhart finds himself in a movie audition where he is mistaken for a actor, auditioning for a role in a detective film. Harry attends a party where he reunites with childhood friend Harmony Faith Lane, who is acting in Beer commercials and wants to make it to the big time and act in Hollywood movies and Harry also meets gay private detective Perry Van Shrike. When Perry discovers a dead body and Harmony's sister commits suicide, Perry decides to involve Harry in the investigation and Harry decides to play along and pretend he is a detective. Investigating the case, Harry and Perry become suspicious of the party guests who have all become suspects, as Harry and Perry set out to uncover the murderer's identity, Harry finds himself falling in love with Harmony.
A petty thief posing as an actor is brought to Los Angeles for an unlikely audition and finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation along with his high school dream girl and a detective who's been training him for his upcoming role...
Without a doubt I thought that this was truly entertaining film. I only managed to catch it at my local cinema in a one off showing, but I really wasn't disappointed.
Me and my friend went in the film not truly understanding what to expect. Basically it cracks down to Robert Downey Jr. starting the film off as a burglar, after being shot at he accidentally runs into an acting audition. Breaking down with tears in the office, he accidentally gets the acting job and whisked off to Hollywood with hopes of playing a detective in an upcoming film.
Cue Gay Perry a.k.a Val Kilmer who is fantastic in this film with his dry wit and humour adding some hilarious scenes to this film. He plays a gay detective assigned to help train up Robert Downey Jr. The pair of them get sucked into a story starting with discovery of a corpse and building into deeper plot involving kidnapping and murder. The plot line is genuinely well crafted, and is explored in the perfect amount of depth. It is quite simply littered with many funny moments. Probably the favourite of mine being the running joke of the gay detective through the film, involving the 'faggot' gun. Shane Black directs this film superbly, keeping it alive with sharp wit.
The whole cast clicks together perfectly with Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilmer shining with good support coming from Michelle Monaghan. The film is accompanied by a very light hearted narration from Robert Downey Jr. which makes the film that even bit more engaging.
Overall, a quirky, very amusing film, with a superb cast, and with a run time of 99 minutes, you simply can't afford to miss it.

Best movie I've seen in weeks.
Delicious dark humor, different twists than you expect, and a willingness to have fun making a movie - and share that with the audience. I can't explain that without spoilers, but when you see it, you'll understand - especially after the reference to 'Return of the King' close to the end.
Not the cast I would have picked, but everyone did their job quite well - and there's probably a reason nobody ever asks me to cast their movies.
Not a movie to be taken too seriously - but then, nobody making it wanted you to take it seriously. Have fun watching it, and everyone can go home happy.
Black's sadistic streak remains as uncomfortable as it ever was, and his direction is very much in the house style of producer Joel Silver. But both elements perfectly suit the material, which sneaks in a lot of sly stuff beneath the slick surface.
Clueless thief Harry Lockett (Robert Downey Jr.) runs into an audition for a detective movie audition, when he is pursued by the police, when an attempted toy store robbery goes wrong, which his partner is shot and killed. Harry, mistaken for an actor auditioning for a role in the film, unwittingly wins a role in the film and is invited to attend a Christmas party hosted by former actor Harlan Dexter (Corbin Bernsen). At the party, Harry meets tough private detective Gay Perry (Val Kilmer) and reunites with aspiring actress Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan), whom was Harry's childhood friend. As Gay Perry teaches Harry lessons on being a detective to prepare him for when the film begins production. Harry soon finds himself caught up in a murder mystery, when Dexter's estranged daughter Veronica is murdered, which soon becomes complicated, when Harmony's sexually abused sister Jenna commits suicide and Harmony asks Harry to investigate. Suspecting that Veronica Dexter's murder and Jenna Lane's suicide are somewhat connected and that Jenna's death was no suicide, but murder. Harry and Gay Perry supported by Harmony set out to uncover the truth behind the murder of Veronica Dexter and the death of Jenna Lane and the pair begin to suspect that one of the party guests could be the murderer and they uncover a conspiracy behind the murder case. a5c7b9f00b
