The purge is a horrific night where all crime, even murder, is allowed so people can let the rage building up inside of them out and cleanse their souls on March 21-22. Charlie Roan was the only one who survived a horrific purge game that killed her family and vowed to one day eliminate the night for good. 15 years later, she gets her chance by becoming a candidate for the American election and promising the US that the purge will come to an end. The New Founding Fathers of America or the NFFA saw this as a threat that would compromise their plan of eliminating the poor, who can not defend themselves on this night, and keeping the population down. They planned to use the purge to assassinate Charlie. An old sergeant from the purge: anarchy, who nearly made a mistake of purging on the man who killed his son two years before this, is the head of the security and it is his mission to protect senator Roan from the night so she can live till the election is over. When purgers forced them into the streets of DC, they struggle to survive the night before the purge ends in 7am with the NFFA after them.
It's been seventeen years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn...or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.
If you liked the first 2 purges, or at least the second one, you'll love this. So far the only negative reviews I've seen come from conservatives who really hate liberals and their "agenda". Granted this movie is heavy on politics and the main bad guys are portrayed as all white old men. However there are plenty of gang fights and killings as well as a group of psychotic murderous black girls, contrary to the reviews that say "all the white people are depicted as bad, and all the minorities are depicted as good". If you are a white supremacist or ultra conservative, yeah, you probably won't like this movie and will give it a bad review just because of your political beliefs. However if you can put all that aside and just enjoy the movie for the action packed thrill ride that it is, you won't be let down. I hope for more purges in the future, but if not, it was a hell of a ride.
The idea of The Purge seems to be more real in today's society than ever before, what with the meme's going around and all the negative talk surrounding Politics. So, naturally, Universal had to create a movie titled "The Purge: Election Year" to showcase what The Annual Purge would like in that time. I really enjoyed this movie but, I really enjoyed the first two as well and the overall idea of this movie hasn't changed from film to film. Yes, their are different characters and slightly different plot lines but, for the most part what happens on Purge night stays the same. People die horrible and terrible deaths.
The one thing I did absolutely love about this movie are the characters, however, I'm not talking about the main characters but rather the random people roaming the streets looking for others to kill. These characters are absolutely psychotic with the way they talk, laugh, smile, etc., and I have to say every single one of them was brilliant. I don't think psychotic is an easy part to play but they all made me feel scared. If I was on the street with any of them I would want to run away and I think that's the way the characters in these types of films should make you feel.
In terms of watching the film from beginning to end the plot did increase in suspense as the film went on and ended with an ending I was definitely not expecting. However, aside from the suspense I felt like I was watching the first and second Purge all over again with minor changes and that is the reason I gave this film a six. I do understand that it is difficult to make the plot more complex with the story line is so simple so, you just have to take The Purge for what it is.
Overall, if you are a film watcher who likes diversity within a series I would not recommend seeing this movie in theaters. For all you film watchers who loved the first two, like myself, I would recommend going to see this movie in a heartbeat. However, please leave your little ones at home, I had a three year old sitting next to me, and it wasn't mine, who was crying because they were so scared!
Its greater focus on disreputable genre thrills comes at the expense of making coherent points about class inequalities, political exploitation, or man's inhumanity.
