Live-action role players conjure up a demon from Hell by mistake and they must deal with the consequences.
In a valiant but pointless attempt to cheer up their freshly-dumped friend and former Dungeons and Dragons legend, Joe, two enthusiastic Live Action Role Players--Eric, a 27-level Grand Sorcerer in the making, and Hung, a medieval Master Rogue--drag their sad companion to a large-scale LARP campaign in the middle of a forest. However, things will soon spin out of control, as a malevolently cryptic dark incantation from the pages of a seemingly innocent prop book of spells, inadvertently summons a demonic succubus bent on destruction. Now, try to stop a slaughterous extra-dimensional being with several foam sticks and a handful of plastic swords.
So I see that this movie has gotten mixed reviews so far, but that's not at all surprising; it's not that hard to misinterpret this film as something it isn't. It is not specifically a horror movie or a slasher flick; nor yet is it an entirely supernatural movie or a teen movie or an adventure movie. It is a geek movie. It is a movie made with geeks in mind, and as such, for those who appreciate the abundance of geek/gamer subculture depicted here, it is a mystical gem worth +5 experience points. The dialogue is punchy and hysterical even if you aren't an avid gamer, and yes, Peter Dinklage issues by far the top performance. (But you really have to be paying attention to it even if you'd rather be fawning over Summer Glau.) I wasn't sure what to expect after reading the reviews, but now - in spite of volumes of gore that would make Simon Pegg proud, and a rather silly plot resolution - I'm definitely glad I plunked down and watched it. I thought it was a marvelous, hilarious, raucous romp, not meant to be a serious film at all but just a celebration of geekdom through wackiness. And it's got no shortage of that. Can't wait to share it with my vast circle of nerdy, LARPing, Summer-Glau-worshipping friends.
I actually enjoyed this movie very much. I can see why other people don't like this movie. the effects are not very professional, some jokes are missed on, and there is a repeated puzzle that's never actually answered. But overall I watched it just to pass some time and to cheer up a bit. So I believe that this movie deserves more credit than it's given. It's not made to be a Blockbuster, it's not made to be taken too seriously. If you watch it light-heartedly I promise you will enjoy this movie.
Maybe even have a smile at the end :)
