His story talks about his life before the war when he lived in Poland with his mother, father, sisters and brother. He recounts his experiences of being removed from his home into ghettos, and rounded up again into trains and taken to various labor camps and eventually to Buchenwald. He describes the details he remembers in a series of chapters taking place from 1939 to 1945. He describes his life after the liberation of Buchenwald in 1945 and his reunion with his brother and move to England. He briefly talks about his struggles adjusting into school after not attending for 6 years and not knowing the English language. In 1951, he moved to America. Classroom use: A story such as this can be useful in any history class and any classroom library. The language is very easy to follow and makes a Holocaust memoir much more relatable and realistic than others. This book is particularly special to me because I was able to meet the author of this book/speaker in high school and became very interested in this time period. Therefore, I think I would want to share this same experience with my students by bringing Sidney Finkel to speak to my students about his experiences and have this book to read before and after and use as discussion points. I think having the book and the author of the students would make the learning experience of this very delicate subject very real for them. Many times the story of stories such as Anne Frank’s are sued as the cover story of the Holocaust, but I think a book such as this one makes the story much more engaging.
