An American journalist on assignment in the Australian outback encounters a man-eating crocodile while trapped on a rapidly flooding mud island.
An idyllic wildlife cruise disintegrates into terror when a party of tourists are stalked by a massive man-eating crocodile. Pete McKell, a cynical American travel writer, joins a disparate group of holiday-makers on a river cruise through the waters of Kakadu National Park. Initially Pete clashes with their tour captain, Kate, a feisty young woman who assumes he is just another 'city-slicker' in search of a quick thrill. After an uneventful day cruising the river, Kate is reluctantly persuaded to steer their boat into unexplored territory. They discover a secluded lake but terror strikes when their craft receives a powerful blow from beneath the murky depths and begins to sink. With little choice, she beaches the vessel on the closest dry land -a tiny mud island. With a rising tide and only half an hour of daylight left, fear grips the group as they realize they are trapped in the lair of a 'rogue' crocodile, governed only by its need to hunt and kill. Begrudgingly, Pete and Kate join forces to keep hysteria at bay and in the process start to see beyond their initial impressions. Their first attempt to escape fails, but then Pete has an idea - they must trap the crocodile to enable the group to flee to the other side of the island whilst Kate swims for help. Pete volunteers to stand guard, but without warning, the beast breaks free and targets Kate who fails to resurface. As darkness descends and the muddy waters rise, a terrifying struggle ensues with only one probable outcome death.
I have just watched Rogue this evening and i thought that i was a excellent horror film. A wildlife cruise turns into terror when a party of tourists are stalked by a massive man-eating crocodile. Their tour captain, Kate meets Pete McKell, an American travel writer, they are with a group of holiday-makers on a river cruise through the waters of Kakadu National Park, in Australia. After a day cruising the river, Kate ends up steering their boat into unexplored territory. They discover a lake but terror strikes when their boat gets a powerful blow from beneath the water and begins to sink. she manages to get the group of tourists safely onto a tiny island. The group realise that they are trapped by a massive crocodile, I thought that this was a great movie with a lot of tension throughout the film. 7/10
Unfortunately this film starts with a scene stolen from an American giant crocodile film in which the massive croc takes in a cow that is grazing by the shore of the lake. From their the film follows the same formula as previous overgrown ferocious creatures of the wild hunting humans.
This film is extremely predictable and it makes you wonder how the script raised the budget for this film which failed miserably at the box office. On DVD its still worth the viewing. Rhada Mitchell plays Kate Ryan a tour guide running boat tours along a river gorge in territory that looks like Kakadu National Park. The sweeping aerial shots of the Australian landscape are so beautiful you would think you were watching a travelogue or nature doco. The tourists on Kate's boat are the usual bunch of specially chosen dysfunctional personalities that will frustrate you with their reactions to the showdown with overgrown croc.
Just as think you are being drawn into the same old crock of croc you are taken on an intriguing and suspenseful ride and struggle to survive.
The film is lifted by the beautiful and talented Radha who I think is not only the most underrated Australian actor but the best of the lot.
Radha has this magical presence that holds you spell bound with ability to get onto character and respond to situations with personality which is a huge challenge if playing an Australian. The American tourists in the film are portrayed as likable people instead of the usual stereotyping them as idiots by Australian directors.
In fact the director succeeded in making a really good film with only the script a bit lacking.
Entertaining little creature horror adventure flick and definitely worth a viewing.
On the DVD extras menu Greg McLean says that the film was inspired by stories of a large crocodile that had attacked people in the Northern Territories. The story and characters however have all been made up specifically for the film Surprisingly, the Unrated Version does not feature any more unrated-worthy material than the usual R-Rated version. One can speculate that the Unrated Version is the original Australian Version whereas the R-Rated Version was created especially for the US market and therefore several plotscenes were left out.
