Early mining was carried out by William Jolliffe on Waldridge Fell in 1779 and coals were exported from the River Wear at Fatfield. In 1896 and 1902 coking coal was produced but by 1939 there are no Coke ovens shown on maps of the area which suggests the production of coking coal ceased sometime after 1902.
