2 Feb 2012 Steps. Remove lid from tank. Shut off water by turning the shut-off valve clockwise. Drain as much water out of tank as possible by holding flush lever down until toilet is completely flushed. Sponge or towel out any remaining water in the tank.
Place a small basin below the toilet tank to catch any excess water left in the tank, and soak up any remaining water in the tank with a sponge. Remove the fill valve nut, and then remove the fill valve. Adjust the height of the valve so the marking on top of the valve is at least 1 inch above the overflow tube.
