In a post-apocalyptic future, a biological warfare program gone wrong leaves only four survivors defending themselves from "the infected" - mindless killers. As they struggle to survive and make sense of what is happening, they find another survivor, intent on revealing the truth.
The movie is a post-apocalyptic horror/science fiction film. the setting is in a near post apocalyptic future where a biological warfare program goes wrong, and turns most of humanity to mindless, murderous creatures (hence forth - "infected"). There are five characters, which are still uninfected, trying to survive constant attacks by the infected. each one of them represents in some way a different aspect of human existence, a different world-view, but most important, a different moral view about the world and his/her place in it - The Colonel - A professional soldier. represents the political-military-economic establishment, which sees life as a constant violent struggle for power and resources. The Doctor - Represents a commitment to love, justice and non-violent struggle against all wrong. The Wizard - A young man, an inventor and an autodidact scientist, who looks at life as a puzzle to be solved. he strives to discover, understand and invent, with no thought as to the consequences. The Daughter - A simple girl with simple ambitions - sailing through life enjoying every comfort, while ignoring or unaware of bigger and more profound issues. The Mouser - A murderer and rapist, evil in the most banal aspect of the word. The plot takes place during their last six days, a clear analogy to the six days of creation. all along, as the characters evolve, they listen to a daily radio program dealing with the extinction of the dinosaurs, finding correlating themes to their own situation. as the protagonists move and try to survive, and as their world views and correlations to the situation are gradually reveled, the following themes are explored: the essence of evil, the boundaries of moral responsibility, species (and humankind) extinction, love, grace, euthanasia and more.
This I can honestly say is not an overstatement. The movie contained everything it needed to be become a classic horror movie. It had some gore, emotion,a few jumps,and action all the way through. The movie starts off well with the jumps and the pulse pounding action. Then all calms for a second, only to pick up again and faster.
First off the gore was not as bad as some movies, which are overly gory for no reason. Don't get me wrong there was gore and lots of it, but for some reason it seemed to fit within the movie so well that your not really bothered by it. I'm no gore hound but I honestly couldn't turn away from the screen.
The emotion is excellent for a horror film. Normally you get one dimensional characters, that do things that would never make sense whether panic stricken or not. In this film the emotions were well placed and not cheesy at all. There may have been one scene that went a little overboard but it didn't ruin a thing.
Finally the action was full on pulse pounding. It was a great for a horror film.
First thing - this is NOT a zombie film. Sorry to be pedantic, but zombies are a totally different premise. The people in this are DISEASED, not UNDEAD.
Anyway, the review. It has been a very long time since I came out of a horror film and felt horrified. Yes, I know there are plot holes and continuity errors and the like, but really, if you're watching a film like this with that agenda, you're gonna find a problem.
From the opening scene, the tension built and never let up. The main protagonists were put in an uncompromising situation from the start and when it seemed that it couldn't get any worse, guess what...
Now I know there will be many who disagree with this, but let me qualify my statement. In order for you to feel this way, you have to be willing to suspend your disbelief and try and put yourself in the same position as any of the characters. The true horror comes from being able to appreciate what is happening WITHIN the story that has been laid out for you.
I don't want to say anything about the actual story, because 1) enough people have already and 2) this is an experience. Any fans of intelligent horror should see this film. Simple. As. That.
