Jackie Chan is Inspector Lee, a Hong Kong Detective who helps confiscate three dollars worth of stolen Chinese artifacts from Crime Lord Juntao. Seeking revenge, Juntao kidnaps the daughter of the Chinese consul when he moves to America. Chan is sent as a diplomatic advisor and finds himself paired up with a Los Angeles cop (Chris Tucker) - a man who works alone, and wants to stay that way.
A loyal and dedicated Hong Kong inspector teams up with a reckless and loudmouthed LAPD detective to rescue the Chinese Consul's kidnapped daughter, while trying to arrest a dangerous crime lord along the way.
Once Chris Tucker enters the picture the movie takes off. His humor keeps the movie going. There is a lot of good kick boxing and action of that nature, but the humor keeps the movie fun to watch. It is a movie that will make good at the box office. It's one that you can watch more than once.
I am completely dumbfounded as to why this film has been such a success. Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan unintentionally come across as the two most incompetent, bumbling detectives in the world. Worse still, the FBI are portrayed as being even more stupid. And as a demonstration of how cheesy the plot was look no further than the "doh...do I disarm this bomb by cutting the red wire or the blue wire" cliche.
It is supposed to be a nobrainer action buddy movie you may say, so who needs a plot right? Well fine, I would have no problem with that if the action was good. However, Jackie Chan only gets to demonstrate his talent (ie. kicking ass) a couple of times and even then they were poorly choreographed. He does get to do one stunt where he falls off a ledge, but you could almost see the string lowering him to the ground. As any Jackie Chan aficionado knows, he normally does his own stunts with very few (un)special effects - this is one of his trademarks.
And how about all those quotes from 'the general public' which said how "hilarious" this film is. If your idea of funny was DJ Ruby Rod from The Fifth Element, or Dumb & Dumber then perhaps. The only bit I found hilarious was the bit where the little girl is in the back of the limo singing along to Mariah Carey's Sweet Fantasy, although I know not why.
I suppose the biggest disappointment was the fact that this was NOT a Jackie Chan Movie©. If you would like to see one of these then I would thoroughly recommend Police Story.
The crime story here is lazily constructed, mostly an excuse for the give-and-take between Tucker and Chan, which is shrill and raucous without being especially clever.
