Rookie cop Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces in Central City.
Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again. When a Rookie cop named Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face who has other plans. He's going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this cold hearted killer from the city's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill the masked crusader.
Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of Frank Miller, and I loved Sin City. But this movie is really a load of crap. Visually interesting, but not as cutting edge as Sin City from which it is borrowing much of its style but without its spirit (pun intended). The story is so flat, uninteresting and stupid that it tanks the movie. The best thing you can do is watch it with the sound off (if you really have time to waste and want to watch it anyway). Either Frank Miller has done this movie while under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms, or I never truly understood his work up to now, and I deeply regret it. This movie is Sin City on crack, with half its brain gone and the other half mentally retarded.
On paper, The Spirit looked like a perfect project: based on the acclaimed comic-book by Will Eisner, brought to the screen in the same fashion as Sin City and directed by the latter's creator, self-confessed Eisner fan - and comics guru in his own right - Frank Miller. Throw in a cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson and Eva Mendes, and it's easy to see why this was considered a film to look forward to. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, and the fact that it came out in the same year as Iron Man, Hellboy II and especially The Dark Knight only enhances the feeling of sore disappointment.
What went wrong? It can't have been the premise, which is relatively faithful to Esiner's original: rookie cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) is killed and mysteriously resurrected. Staying in the shadows, he vows to protect Central City - in the guise of the Spirit - from scum like the Octopus (Jackson), a mad scientist aided by Silken Floss (Johansson). Along the way, Colt/Spirit also has to deal with his unstoppable libido and captivating effect on the ladies, which include a thief (Mendes) and a police doctor (Sarah Paulson) with whom he has a previous personal connection.
So far, so good. In fact, the noir-ish feel of Eisner's storytelling seems like a perfect fit for Miller, although the neo-filmmaker has made the material his own - literally - by retaining Sin City's monochrome style. And that's where the cracks start to show: whereas Basin City was a place filled with darkness and despair, Miller's rendition of Central City is brought to life in a camp fashion reminiscent of Joel Schumacher's version of Batman (remember that one? Thought so). Okay, so the original comic does have a fun, slightly preposterous side to it (I mean, the protagonist's resurrection is never fully explained, for one thing), but that doesn't justify the director's decision to remove any hint of seriousness and just go for plain absurdity, with a plot that is largely irrelevant and, by the end, utterly implausible.
The cast is another problem, and a big one at that: ironically given her comedy background, Paulson gives the most grounded of the movie's performances, and Macht tries his best whenever he shares the screen with her, but otherwise he's just bland, much like Eva Mendes. The worst, however, are Jackson, Johansson and Paz Vega, whose OTT turns are monuments to silliness beyond redemption. Let's put it this way: when the villain's idiotic henchmen (a bunch of clones, all played by Louis Lombardi and sporting stupid names) are more believable than the villain himself, something's not working.
In the right hands, The Spirit could have been a fun adventure, a reminder of why Eisner is considered one of the all-time greats in the comic-book industry. Instead, what we get is an incoherent mess that justifies half a viewing on the sole grounds of its admittedly intriguing visuals. Too bad there's no real spirit (pun intended) behind them.
4,5/10
As the vamps, Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson might be posing for a fashion spread with just one note to play -- gorgeous high-bitch mockery.
The Spirit is based on a 1940s newspaper strip of the same name by American comics writer Will Eisner [1917-2005]. It was adapted for the screen by comics artist and screenwriter Frank Miller, best known for his Sin City comics. Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson): The daughter of Commissioner Dolan, in her pre-war appearances she tried to win the affection of The Spirit by getting into trouble which required The Spirit's assistance. After the war, the relationship evolved with a romantic affection between the two strongly implied. In later years (in November 1950), Ellen ran and won the role of Mayor of Central City.
Commissioner Dolan (Dan Lauria): The Police Commissioner of Central City, he met The Spirit on his first adventure and although knowing that The Spirit was Denny Colt was under orders to apprehend The Spirit for the first few months. Although Dolan's first name was always given as "Eustace" in all his post-war Spirit tales, he was called "Diogenes" by his sister-in-law in one pre-war story.
The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson): The Spirit's arch nemesis, The Octopus never showed his face in the stories but readers could always identify the character by the distinctive gloves he always wore. A master of disguise, The Octopus was involved in the epic fight with The Spirit which left Denny Colt blinded.

The Spirit (Gabriel Macht): Police Officer Denny Colt was thought dead and buried at Wildwood Cemetery after a gunfight in which he is covered in some experimental chemicals. Returning to life he assumes the guise of The Spirit and wages a one-man war against crime and injustice. Although he has no superpowers, The Spirit is able to take practically an endless amount of physical punishment. It is also suggested that the chemicals in which he was doused in have prolonged his life. Huevos rancheros is a popular dish eaten for breakfast in Mexico. Basically it's composed of a couple of sunny side up eggs over a couple of corn tortillas with hot tomato or chili sauce poured over them, served with beans and cheese. The reason why the clones are called that is uncertain, possibly only for comical reasons as well as the Adios Amigos clones at the end. In Spanish slang, huevos refer to testicles, so it could be some form of reference to them as being badasses (hot temper and big... huevos). Other than Frank Miller adapting this film, and the visual style used for both films, there are no connections. To get the 12 rating, George Miller needed to make some modifications: three cuts were made plus one digital modification. This is also the version shown in movie theaters. The uncut version was released by Lionsgate on DVD and Blu-ray disc, is rated 15 and it's called "Extended Cut". a5c7b9f00b
