Fighting against pirates in "old Hong Kong". Chinese costume drama with plenty of over-the-top tongue in cheek action and music.
In late 19th Century Hong Kong the British may rule the land, but the pirates rule the waters. Reluctantly, the Coast Guard is given money to fight these pirates, but the pirates themselves have many contacts (that is, bribed officials) in the government, and seek to thwart the Coast Guard's efforts to eliminate them. One Coast Guard officer is Dragon Ma, who is determined that his beloved Coast Guard will not be made fools of.
I happen to come across this one on my recent trip to my local video store and I was VERY pleasantly surprised. Being mainly a Jackie Fan when it comes to action movies, somehow though it seemed I had missed this one, not surprising at all since I seem to come across more and more of his titles after since Rumble in the Bronx and just like everyone else, I can't get enough of Jackie!!! Overall, the movie flowed very nicely. There was very witty dialog, a great story-line (who can't excited when pirates are involved!), and unparalleled action sequences with not only the movie in general, but add to that the scene with Martial Law's Mr. Hung and the bicycle chase scene about half way through the most just adds even more to the fact why I think this movie is definitely up there in the top 5 Jackie movies of all times.
Overall rating 6 out of 5, you won't be disappointed with Jackie Starring and Directing in this one, as he most often does, and does well!
by far my favourite of all my Jackie Chan films. i never get tired of seeing the film. the fight seens are just immense and the stunts that are involved in the film are really good. especially the stunt where Jackie chan falls of the clock tower this is really effective. i have the video of the film but was thinking of buying the dvd too. as i would like to see all of the extras of such a good film.
Like so many other HK movies, this classic from the glory days of the trio Jackie Chan / Sammo Hung / Yuen Biao is cut and got a new score in the US. The approx. 8 minutes shorter version mainly lacks ridiculous comedy scenes. The abduction of Samo Hung is missing as well because Mahjong is not necessarily reasonable for a Western audience.
