Jefferson Pierce is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa and Jennifer grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn, suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce's crime-fighting days are long behind him...or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns - to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.
Jefferson Pierce has made his choice. He hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he'll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend: Black Lightning.
This review is for the pilot episode only.
Based on all of the negative reviews, I thought this show must have been terrible. However, after viewing the premier episode, I recommend that people do what I did - actually watch this show and decide for themselves. This episode is entitled "The Resurrection" and can be seen on the CW, CWTV.com and Netflix.
I read a number of reviews and wondered if the people who watched the first episode saw the same show that I did. Many reviewers felt that the show only reinforced stereotypes. Other reviewers stated that nothing much happened or that the plot was overly simplistic. These reviewers don't seem to remember how comic book super hero stories work.
The first episodes have to lay the groundwork. The origin story is critical. As a long-time Spiderman fan I have to ask who can forget the famous "bitten by a radioactive spider" tagline. Now to be honest, this premier episode does not really go into the origins of Black Lightning. Rather, it covers why Jefferson Pierce is not using his powers, which is important to the plot. Moreover, Black Lightning is more complex than many super hero shows because he is NOT the only person who superpowers.
This episode talks about not just Black Lightning but his family dynamic and the importance of the school to his story. It also begins introducing the villains and their organization.
For those reviewers who have a problem with the initial police traffic stop scene, I recommend that they do additional research and speak with some of their black friends. Here is a link to an article describing the experiences of Senator Tim Scott. In this article Senator Scott notes that he was stopped 7 times in one year. Moreover, he talks about other colleagues who have similar experiences. Please note that he is a Republican Senator. http://fortune.com/2016/07/14/republican-tim-scott-police-racism/. You can also do online searches on the experiences of black professional and black police officers when they are out of uniform. It makes for interesting reading.
It should be noted that many super heroes have run-ins with the police. Andrew Garfield in the Spiderman reboot captures much of the bravado and "trash talking" of the Spiderman comics that I read in the 1960s and 70s. He trash talks the criminal and the police and has no problem fighting the police when necessary. You can go to Youtube and look up "The Amazing Spider-Man Police Fight Scene" to see what I mean. Spiderman fights police officers to protect his identity and I don't recall in angst over these scenes. Makes you wonder why there is so much angst this time around.
To those reviewers who say that whites are stereotyped as evil, they seem to have missed Gambi who is obviously a key figure in Black Lightning's origins.
Rather than reinforcing stereotypes, I think "Black Lightning" tries to subvert them. To me a stereotype would be making the key villain a member of the KKK. As a black person I thought that this show did a good job of showing black gang violence and how it affects the community. I don't like the trope that has the ultimate "bad guy" being a white outsider. In reality there are plenty of black criminals that need to be fought by the black community. The eldest daughter is in fact protesting some of these criminals when she is arrested. Also, the antagonist Tobias Whale is black! The back story describes him as an "African-American Albino" and the actor playing this character fits that description.
As a Principal in a high achieving High School Jefferson Pierce is trying to coexist with the existing gang structure. He tries to reason with the gang member "Will" who unfortunately reacts just like too many young "bangers" and tries to make his bad decisions someone else's fault. Please note that he is the one who owes money to the gang leader "Lala" and as a result drags the Jefferson's daughters into his problem.
In summary, I think that this first episode of Black Lightning actually has a great deal going on. It introduces key characters including villains and sets up the super hero's reason for being. As a premier, it does what it is supposed to do.
My rating - 7.6 / 10
They take a black superhero and immediately make a story with gangs, guns, drugs, prostitution and every cliche from comic books about black heroes. It's bad story telling right out of the box. It's looking at liquor stores on every corner of poor neighborhoods and saying, "That's just how black neighborhoods are." NO. This is a man with incredible abilities, but because of the lack of knowledge by white executives & white writers; the only challenge Black Lightning will face is a school shooting. Supergirl gets to fight crazy aliens from all over the galaxy, but a black man who can shoot lightning bolts out of his hands is left to fight highschool dropouts?
The music for the show is predictable, the dialogue is undeveloped and that suit is no better than Black Lightning's old disco days. DC can't write good characters. How the hell do we have Marvel all over Netflix setting the standard but this is the best DC can muster? Change it up or it'll get dull really fast.
