Horatio Caine, a former homicide detective, heads a group of investigators who work crimes amid the steamy, tropical surroundings and cultural crossroads of Miami. His team includes Calleigh Duquesne, a bilingual Southern beauty with a specialty in ballistics; Tim Speedle, a cocky yet disarming investigator who is well connected on the street, and Eric Delko, an underwater recovery expert who knows all the twists and turns of the Florida waterways. Rounding out the team is Alexx Woods, the no-nonsense, know-it-all coroner. And, after Speedle is killed in Action, Former Patrolman Ryan Wolfe joins the team. Together, these investigators collect and analyze the evidence to solve the crimes and to vindicate those who often cannot speak for themselves -- the victims.
The cases of the Miami-Dade, Florida police department's Crime Scene Investigations unit.
I guess this is, as much about exploitation of audience as it is about pleasing all corners of U.S. territory - So the next CSI would be shot on Hawaii or in Alaska. An more interesting take on the whole forensic/pathology/ballistics's, etc. idea would for instance to place it in the Victorian era in London or revolutionary France, where some of the greatest luxuries would be a ruler or a microscope; that to me would seem like a greater challenge.
There are three versions. I have chosen to review the Miami one since this land in the middle of the two others, although all three of them are equally naive and borderline stupid. If the reason is too present escapist, fastfood-like plots all three shows actually work quite well when you're home from work with a cold or suffer a hangover.
This is where all three shows fail on equal basis: 1. Forensic investigators do not run around with guns, turning the city they work in, into a Sam Peckinpah shoot out.
2. If any city would spend so much man power on every case, the city's economy would be ruined pretty quickly.
3. It would ad grit and realism if the CSI-teams failed every once in a while. When 15 minutes remain of every episode you pretty much loose interest if you haven't changed the channel already after the mandatory montage scene with electronica music pounding over the soundtrack while the investigators use q-tips and coloured liquids in different vials. Take Note: Laboratories don't look like post-modern night clubs as they do here.
4. If police employees would treat suspects/witnesses the way they do in all shows they would get no collaboration. If some muppet-officer would treat me the same way these teams treat people I would obstruct justice for the fun of it. They are so unlikeable (all the characters) you actually root for the bad guys to get away with the crime. They're all pretentious, rude, cold, unempathetic and unpleasant; had they been really persons they would never get into any academy unless they tried out for CCCP's KGB or Gestapo.
5. Why must every team leader pull this strained, cheesy one liner before every opening credit. If some prostitute is found sliced and diced in a hotel room the team leader always looks into the camera and says something like: "That was the last time she charged you an arm and a leg." No professional treats dead people with such disrespect, especially not after the victim suffered a violent death.
It's a kids show with over the top, tasteless violence and some really far-fetched stories.
Okay, I'm on the fence with Miami.
I adore Vegas, I really do, but recently I got into Miami and I've been addicted to this show as well. However, I see its shortcomings, and it makes you wonder whether it comes up to par with its original. It's definitely more popular than Vegas internationally, but some aspects of the show come into question.
First of all, Miami is a lot flashier. Some people think that makes it better, some don't. I think I can understand people who prefer Miami because it happens in the day, but Vegas happening at night is unique. There's more action, and the characters are more involved, more stuff happens to them, the situations and plot progessions are more fictional. This is a more conventional TV show, whereas Vegas concentrates more on the cases, and their CSI's are more behind the scenes instead of run around'n'catch'em.
Second of all, the front runner of the show. Vegas has Grissom. New York has Taylor. Miami has Caine. huh....Horatio, Horatio, what can I say about you? He's compelling to watch at first. Then, it gets old. Really old. With some of the situations you can't help but yell, "That's so CHEESY! Why isn't anyone else cringing at this?" He makes waaaay too many promises, either to protect someone, or catch someone, or make sure he's gonna get someone. How the heck does he keep track of it all? He is far too damn uppity moral, and his interactions with Marisol are without chemistry whatsoever. I don't understand how Delko can handle it (I think he might blow).
Apart from that, the rest of the cast is quite excellent and endearing. In fact, Miami is quite a slick, well-oiled machine. The film-making here is just as professional and top-notch as the rest of the CSI shows, which is a big kudos to the producers and creative team. At least you're watching quality, you know? To summ it all up though, I think there is one thing I can say that will fully explain Miami (and other users on IMDb have put this in their comments too).
If Emily Procter leaves the show (oh god if Calleigh's the mole I'm gonna die) I'm not watching Miami anymore.
While often the science and technology portrayed in this series (as well as the other CSI series) is accurate or mirrors sound scientific principle, there have been times when methods have led to results simply not possible in the real world. Also whilst the majority of the techniques and technologies used in the CSI franchise are accurate and true to reality, the writers and crew readily admit that they "time cheat". Tests that take seconds in the show often take days or even weeks in real life. Meanwhile the extreme popularity of the CSI TV franchise was credited for a large surge of applications for courses in forensic science, however many present day applicants are surprised to discover that the CSI's (or Crime Scene Annalists/Crime Scene Technicians, Scientific Investigators ect.) do not perform most of the tasks depicted on the CSI series. E.g. They do not interview suspects, they do not write or execute search warrants, and they do not make arrests. CSI's do not work the way the series portrays them as It would be considered an inappropriate and improbable practice to allow CSI personnel to be involved in detective work as it would compromise the impartiality of scientific evidence and would be impracticably time-consuming. In real life they are directed around the scenes by the detectives and supervisors, not the other way around. Detectives are commissioned police officers (sworn personnel). CSI's are civilian personnel, not sworn and do not have the same arrest powers as police officers. However they are very skilled technicians, and are a component of the police response to crime. American law allows for the 'false deception ploy' where the police can claim to have evidence (fingerprints, DNA, CCTV, witnesses) they do not in order to gain a confession, the idea being that any innocent person would know such evidence could not exist and see through it. This has become increasingly controversial however due to cases such as the Central Park 5 rape case in New York where the suspects were told their co-defendants were saying they were responsible so they accused them in turn only to be exonerated years later. No, they can enter in hot pursuit, to preserve life, to prevent imminent destruction of evidence or to search for a wanted felon. They need a search warrant for evidence when those elements do not apply. Lately I have noticed that the show is enhanced with truly score-like orchestral soundtrack. I tried to find out who the composer is. None of the official large soundtrack bases and platform have any information about it. It would be nice to find out. The same goes for similar shows like CSI NY or the original CSI Las Vegas.
For CSI. Miami is The Who- Wont Get Fooled Again and for CSI : NY is The Who- Baba O'riley a5c7b9f00b
