It's called Elysium and it's just within Earth's orbit. and they have all sorts of conveniences among them is a machine can heal anyone. So people on Earth who want to use it try to get there. But the Secretary of Defense Delacourt uses unsanctioned operatives like a man named Kruger to keep them off Elysium. Her latest attempt to keep people off Alysium catches the ire of the President who tells her to tone down her attitude and to stop using men like Kruger. Delacourt then approaches Carlyle, the head of Armadyne Corp, the company that built Elysium and all of what they use up there and asks him to make a program that would allow her to remove the President and put someone else in his position. He agrees to do it. On Earth, Max a man who has dreamed of going to Elysium and taking Frey, a girl he grew up with there. Max works for Armadyne and while at work Max is exposed to radiation and has days to live and needs to go to Elysium to use the machine. So he approaches Spider the man who gets people to Elysium for a price. But since Max can't pay him, he makes Max a proposition, he will get him there if Max gets some information out of the head of Armadyne's head. Max agrees and is fitted with an exo-skeleton to help him. They intercept Carlyle as he was leaving for Elysium to deliver the program to Delacout and get the information out of him. Delacourt would send Kruger to save Carlyle but is killed in the crossfire. Delacourt tells Kruger to get Max because he has the program in his head. And Kruger decides to get Max through Frey. When Spider sees the program he tells Max this could change the whole system but Max wants to help Frey first.In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.This movie is about "white flight" at the scientific and futuristic level. If you weren't convinced that the majority of this country is going to be Latino in a few years, this movie, which takes place in 2154 will surely convince you. It's an incredible movie, a direct rip off of race relations in this country, stripped from the annals of white interpretation, dipped into a batter of intergalactic bullshit, and the put on the screen so that viewers, especially the Millennials, will think that "man, this couldn't happen" when, in reality, it's already happening right in the face of these young idiots. This is a story about Trey and Max, a cute Latina and a white dude who grew up together in the slums, or that is, what is left of Earth. He has adapted as they grew up and went their separate ways. She was smart and left to become a nurse. He was a hustler, car thief and thug who ends up doing blue collar assembly line grunt work in some hi-tech factor (don't forget this is the 22nd century). They pledge themselves to each other with tattoos, but it's not much more than that. In reality, Max would be a black man from the South in the 1940s working in the most hazardous areas of any plant or factory. But all they have to do is steal this reality, flip it, make the hard working guy a white boy, and these Millennials – who know about as much about history as a wino knows about building a laser gun – won't know the difference. While working for corporate giant Armadyne, Max's boss forces him to repair a machine and Max gets caught in it and is exposed to a fatal dose of radiation (shades of Yaphet Kotto in "Blue Collar," where he was intentionally locked in a paint room at a car factor and died). Of course the boss who assigned Max to "fix it" knew it was hazardous and as Max is carried out of the radiation filled chamber, the boss disappears. This is the way they treated black men during the 1940s in the foundries in Detroit when it would get so hot their work boots would literally melt. At any rate, Max doesn't die, but is told by the doctors that he has only five days to live. While he's at the hospital he runs across Frey, who has returned and is working as a nurse. They begin to rekindle what they once had. As both "We're the Miller" and "2 Guns" made clear, Latinos are the order of the day. "Elysium is no exception. The part of the world they are in, America, is not predominantly Latino and I didn't see three blacks together throughout the entire movie. At any rate, Frey's young daughter has a physical disability. Now, we've established the relationship, we have to talk about context. "Elysium," is what the white man's goal is in real life: more segregation, this time based on class, not just race. They get all the good stuff – space, land, good health care, clean air, luxury – and the vast majority of people don't get squat. Is this not the way it was during "white flight" in the 1960s when blacks move to the city and white folks immediately packed up, left and created "the suburbs"? This movie featured Latinos because that is the trick that is being used on the Millenials. Just as "World War Z" had a global, somewhat "third world" flavor, and "2 Guns" had a Mexican flavor, "Wolverine" had a definitive Asian flavor, and "Lone Ranger" was Native American, so it is with "Elysium" and its thrust toward Latinos from top to bottom: love interest, bad guys, corporate brains and so on. This "multicultural cast" dupes young people into thinking that everybody's the same, while the racist message of these white boys coming out as winners in every single scenario, is ingrained in their minds and as such, the myth of white supremacy is maintained. Sure, it's a movie NOW, but the theme is so typical of him: he creates another world, basically a giant satellite revolving around polluted earth, where only the wealth can live. In other words, for whites only. Wasn't that the same way it was during the days of legal segregation and isn't that the way it still is with all these "gated communities" and "upscale habitats"? And as it is in real life, Elysium is the place where there is fresh air (ala the suburbs) and where you can get top notch medical care, including cares for all diseases. Meanwhile, earthlings inhale polluted air, live in the midst of squalor and suffer from high population density in high crime. In other words, a re-creation of the ghetto and barrio.I see so many reviews around here saying this movie is a waste and its just bad. I still insist on watching the film on theater though, what amazes me is how the film delivered its uplifting story we tend to mislead our standards with this film because it is not just an action pack adventure sci-fi theme it have its lesson to tell and not just that it needs to rebuild our thinking of whats with the future ahead.
I am deeply amaze that today we can now conceptualize our future which holds a machine that cures every disease. The movie expresses its role to uplift and motivate each one of us that we have a purpose to fulfill and in-order to make it happen we should not forget what inspires us. Many movies contain an eye opening message about our future but this is one of those which is kinda realistic for me, because as our resources reach its scarcity our world will tend to die itself, even sustaining a healthy life. So we seek ways in order to live better.A cheekily gruesome and genuinely urgent entertainment, Blomkamp's latest nevertheless can't help but beg the question: Where's Snake Plissken when you need him?Former car thief Max da Costa (Matt Damon), now a parolee working for the Armadyne weapons factory in 2154 Los Angeles and recently exposed to a lethal dose of radiation bound to kill him in five days, agrees to steal "organic information" (e.g., bank codes and passwords) from the brain of Armadyne CEO John Carlyle (William Fichtner) in exchange for passage to Elysium, a man-made space station inhabited by Earth's elite, in hopes of gaining access to a Med-bay, a medical chamber capable of healing him. However, what begins as a desperate effort to save his life leads to something far greater. Elysium is based on a screenplay written by South African-Canadian filmmaker Neill Blomkamp. While Frey (Alice Braga) carries Matilda (Emma Tremblay) to the surface to find a Med-bay, Max and Spider (Wagner Moura) stay behind to locate the Elysium's computer core. In an attempt to stop them, Tucker (Sharlto Copley) pursues, but Max manages to kill him by hurling him over a ledge, still holding on to a grenade, which explodes as he falls. Spider breaks into the computer core and changes the computer program to read Earth's population as being "legal". As Spider prepares to download the "organic info" from Max's brain, he is warned that the download will be "lethal" to Max. Already knowing that, Max still agrees to the download. After contacting Frey for a final goodbye, Max pushes the button that starts the download and reboots the computer, killing himself in the process. President Patel (Faran Tahir) arrives with security robots, but they refuse to arrest Spider, who is now recognized as a citizen of Elysium. Meanwhile, Frey has found a Med-bay and uses it to heal Matilda, reversing her final stage lymphocytic leukemia in seconds. In the final scene, shuttles containing dozens of Med-bays arrive on Earth from Elysium to begin the process of healing the sick, causing Frey to look up and smile. Elysium spins, like a wheel, and the resulting centrifugal force creates artificial gravity on its inner edge. This keeps both its inhabitants and the atmosphere [not really, see entry above!] effectively pinned down to the surface.
