After losing her job, Jersey girl Stephanie Plum is broke. Needing a job she is told that her cousin, a bail bondsman, needs someone to help out in the office. But the only job openings he has are for skip tracers. She learns that Joe Morelli, a guy she knew intimately years ago, is one of the "skips". She eventually finds him but wasn't really prepared so he gets away. Another bounty hunter, Ranger, tries to teach her. Eventually she finds Morelli again, but he claims he is innocent of the crime he is accused of and he is trying to prove his innocence. Eventually Stephanie thinks he's telling the truth so she stakes out the person who can help him. She only finds herself in trouble and Morelli saves her. She tries to find someone who can prove his innocence, but the problem is that shortly after meeting with them they're killed or attacked.
Unemployed and newly-divorced Stephanie Plum lands a job at her cousin's bail-bond business, where her first assignment puts her on the trail of a wanted local cop from her romantic past.
Although I am a major mystery fan, I am NOT an Evanovich fan. I find her books to be frantic, the pacing jarring and the characters confusing.I didn't understand how she got 18 books out of this character. After that many some people are just phoning them in.
That being said, I had to see this movie. Even though it was clearly a chick flick, hubby agreed to go. It turned out to be benign, funny and enjoyable. The characters finally made sense to me and I could follow the plot, something I tended to have trouble with in her books. Catheine Heigl was gorgeous, of course, but she was edgy and funny enough to seem real and believable. (All the gun stuff was hysterical.) And hubby said he liked it. It was just s fun afternoon movie. Nothing heavy, nothing serious. Just a sexy romp rounding up the bad guys.
Do I want to run out and try to read the books again??? No. I hated them But I did enjoy the movie very much.
Enjoyable movie, if you have read the Janet Evonovich series of Stephanie Plum books. Its a chick flick, the show I saw was filled with middle-aged women. They had a great time.
The movie introduces the characters, with not a lot of character development. Its a romantic comedy without a lot of romance, that comes in later books. Just flirting and joking. Contains explosions and gun play, violent crimes are discussed casually.
While Ms Heigel is clearly having a good time in the movie, and she is well cast, many of the others are miscast. The choice of Jason O'Mara to play the hunky Italian Morrelli is baffling. He's charming, but fails the tall dark and handsome part, which is critical to Morrelli's life and his interactions with Stephanie Plum. Similarly, Daniel Sunjata does an OK job as Ranger, but he is not nearly as big and muscled as the books describe.
Worst, they used a 70s vintage Buick for Big Blue, which is supposed to be a mid-50s rolling tank.
I am not convinced that this "first out of 14" will do well enough to establish the series.
As played by Heigl, Stephanie is mind-blowingly charmless.
