When the world is threatened by an ancient evil, the four adolescent turtles must reunite and overcome their faults in order to stand against it.
After the defeat of their old arch nemesis, The Shredder, the Turtles have grown apart as a family. Struggling to keep them together, their sensei, Master Splinter, becomes worried when strange things brewing in New York City. Tech-industrialist tycoon Max Winters revives four ancient stone warriors and enlists the help of the foot clan to help capture ancient monsters.
When I first heard about this film I must admit, I was less than excited. I was possibly one of the worlds biggest turtles fans back in the early 90's and I adored the TV show and the first film and thoroughly enjoyed being swept up in Turtlemania at the time.
This film seemed to be a futile attempt to ignite a long since dead franchise and party of me was comfortable with the Turtles being in the past and I didn't want the grave disturbed, nor was I particularly interested in the green brothers at my thirtysomething age anymore, but I gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised.
The film takes place after the events of the 90's live action films and here we see a fascinating slice of life with Turtles who are maybe coming to the send of their teenage years and having to accept responsibilities of adulthood. A much darker film this is indeed which was really what the Turtles had been screaming out for since the ultra violent comic books debuted back in 1984 and while it's not a grim gorefest the level of action is a good step towards a more mature audience and it's great to see the realisation of this.
The CGI strange indeed. Quality all round it has to be said as the moody setting of new york is digitally painted in front of us. I wasn't ultra keen on the character design though, the turtles look fine but everyone else seems to be exaggerated using templates that we've seen a good few years ago. The mouth animation has an unrealistic, almost death mask feel to it when speaking and doesn't quite get there to match the fine voice acting. Overall though the film is a bit of a visual feast.
The voice acting turns in fine performances from Patrick Stewart, Chris Evans and Sarah Michelle Gellar and they are all quite convincing as their characters.
This was also sadly the last film for the magnificent Mako and his gruff voice is always a welcome addition to any film but here he sounds rather bored and not sure of how to deliver the lines. Whether this was age or perhaps confusion at the plot is unclear but what should have been a perfect and fitting last role for Mako turns out more a warm bow out rather than a blistering exit.
The plot is where it really falls apart though, trying to be far too complex for it's own good and this leaves the film feeling like one big build up with nothing really amazing happening in between to keep the interest. At an hour and a half long it's far too short to really flesh out what's going on and had it been longer it may have fared a little better but the lack of a real villain in the whole film and not really knowing who's side who is on seems to make it lack direction. The focus on Raphael and Leonardo makes the film seem lop sided when you are used to all 4 turtles being treated equally and you do crave more Don and Mikey at times.
I may sound like I'm pointing out all the bad but I'm not really. TMNT is a magnificent looking film with some really interesting character development and it's certainly a step in the right direction but it's just not quite there.
It's shoot's for the bullseye but just misses by an inch or two and while that is a shame to be sure it still means that this is a quality film that s worthy to be in anyone's collection!
WOOHOO!!!I LOVE The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and this movie makes them ROCK!!! They are more like the older Japanese comics(of course toned down for maturer audiences) and oh man it is awesome.
Man I really hope and can't wait for a sequel. I myself also grew up with the Turtles and had been keeping up with the current Cartoons. And oh man this movie made my day, night, week and even month. In fact i may even see it in theaters a few more times.
This is a must buy movie. And definitely worth the $8 to $10 ticket price. If you are a Fan your gonna cry with joy and if your not you may be after this movies, regardless of age. Great for Comedy, Action, Fantasy and Martial Arts Choreography. Seriously Watch it and if you are going to I will easily go and watch it with you.

It takes more than an awkward title attempting to sound cool to overcome its mundane plot and silly dialogue.
