Set in the future and with the world plunged in economic crisis a new cold war with China, Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is on the verge of developing the world's first artificially intelligent robotic soldier. The robot sounds and looks human but has amazing strength, speed, and agility. When the defense project gets close to completion, the AI controlled robot is pulled from the research and testing phase and thrust into military training mode. The child-like AI is traumatized by the transition, the way a pit bull puppy might be when brutalized for similar purposes. In a broad effort to preserve itself and those it has come to care about, the AI robot and a posse of cyborg veterans working within the MoD stage a lethal takeover of the research facility.
In a near future, with China at war against the West, the UK government develops war machines to fight against them. Scientist Vincent works in a military base developing artificial intelligence for the Ministry of Defense, using soldiers near death in his experiments; however, his true intention is to find a cure to his daughter Mary that has Rett Syndrome. When Vincent meets scientist Ava who has developed an advanced AI, he invites her to work with him for the Defense Department; however, Ava's snoop around the base prompts Chief of Research Thomson into simulating a Chinese attempt to kill her. Vincent decides to use Ava's face and shape to build an indestructible AI Machine. Soon he discovers the Machine developing feelings and growing up as a human being. When Mary gets worse and has to be submitted to surgery, Vincent learns that the Machine has life and is in love with him, but Thomson wants to transform her in a killing machine for the military.
Okay, so I read quite a few negative reviews about this movie, which made me hesitant about even watching it. I'm glad I don't always trust the reviews!
The Machine is a very thought provoking sci-fi film that has a very dark feel to it. The producers really set the genre up well, and stuck with it - which is good!
Yeah, the acting could have been better, but hey, sometimes we can't have the best of everything. Caty Lotz does a pretty convincing job of playing 'The Machine', and she's pretty easy on the eyes to boot - which is a bonus!
There are several scenes which show the humanoids speaking with one another, which was annoying. Mainly because there aren't any machine-to- human subtitles available with the film. Who knows what they were discussing?!? (I won't say any more - no spoilers!)
All in all, The Machine is a pretty good sci-fi flick. You just have to overlook some of the poor acting and get immersed in the story - chill with the criticism and go along for the ride.
on the back of the DVD box it said something like.. the closest movie to blade runner since 1981 with blade runner written in bold type
please know that this movie even though it was made in 2013, looks and sounds like a made for TV British film made in the 1990's. It starts off reasonably but it quickly becomes evident that this is not a good movie at all
the direction is all over the place, the visual effects look cheap and nasty with no effort made to obscure this, and there is no interesting sound at all. the score is irritating, vangelis this isn't, there is absolutely no ambiance present.. no machinery hums, nothing. what?
let's discuss blade runner for a moment.. . blade runner had an incredible score which doubled as ambiance most of the time. the replicants were good because they were acted out as humans, there was no hammy robot impressions. this is not so in the machine. in the machine they have their own klingon style language and each actor is pretending to be a robot with the main one acting like a small child
the ending is abrupt and confused. either avoid this movie or know what to expect before you see it, i.e don't pay any attention to the blurb on the back of the DVD box
Closer to “Her" in its musing on human/machine connectivity, while also incorporating the dystopian and action-thriller aspects of “Blade Runner" and its ilk, albeit on a much smaller scale, the pic will divide fantasy fans, some of whom will give it props for breaking somewhat from genre formula, while others will be disappointed by the largely budgetary limits of its imagination.
