Agent Gracie Hart shows no signs of having any femininity in her demeanor or appearance. Generally a bright and capable Agent, she is in trouble at work when she makes an error in judgment in a case which results in a near disaster. As such, one of her by-the-books colleagues, Eric Matthews, who has never shown any inclination of thinking outside the box, is assigned to lead the high profile case of a terrorist coined The Citizen instead of her, while she is facing possible disciplinary action. Gracie pieces together the evidence to determine that The Citizen's next target will be the Miss United States beauty pageant. The pageant represents everything that Gracie abhors. Despite Gracie's mannish demeanor, Eric, with no other undercover female Agent remotely fitting the demographic, assigns her to go undercover as a pageant contestant to see if she can flush out The Citizen, who is perhaps one of the other contestants. Although the pageant administration, led by former winner Cathy Morningside and long time host Stan Fields, provide the F.B.I. with access to the pageant, Cathy in particular is less than thrilled to have a non-credible Gracie posing as a contestant, which she feels will ruin the pageant. The F.B.I. enlist the assistance of former pageant contestant coach Victor Melling, who is facing his own disgrace associated with the pageant, to do the nearly impossible task of transforming Gracie, not only into a woman, but a credible beauty pageant contestant. As Gracie proceeds in the transformation, she gets to know the other contestants, not only as potential criminals, but also as real people. She also discovers that another sinister element is present at the pageant. She will do whatever it takes to quash that element and protect her new friends, namely the other innocent contestants. But now displaying some femininity, Gracie begins to have more womanly feelings, and in turn, attracts the attention of men, one in particular about whom she is happy.When a serial killer indicates that his next target is the Miss United States beauty pageant, the F.B.I. decides that they must get an undercover Agent as a participant in the contest. A search uncovers no suitable candidate other than a bumbling female Agent. Reluctantly, her Captain agrees to let her join the team working the case. The team is led by a womanizing Agent who has an apparent reluctant attraction to Bullock's character. She enters as Miss New Jersey, replacing a contestant who was discovered to have acted in a porn movie. The pageant managers are immediately aghast about the Agent appearing in the pageant, but arrange a top handler to come give her a quick make-over, with the expected outstanding results. Unfortunately, she still is bumbling. When the killer is suddenly caught, everything seems to be over, except the female Agent tries to convince her boss that something is still not right. She has discovered that the pageant managers are being dismissed after twenty-one years for younger people, and Bergen's character may not be as solid as she seems on the surface.Cute movie. Sandra Bullock and Candice Bergen were sensational! Hilarious in some parts, serious in other parts. This modern day chick flick shows a misfit cop becoming a beauty contest star. You'll find lots of friendships in this movie - young ladies will love this movie. I recommend it - 7 out of 10.Miss Congeniality was so much more than I expected. Sandra Bullock's last few movies I have found to be rather tepid and childish. I absolutely hated "Practical Magic" and "Forces Of Nature." I haven't bothered to see "Gun Shy" and "28 Days" didn't seem to appealing, though after seeing this I plan to go rent it. I think Ms. Bullock is extremely talented, and after her last few films I almost thought she was becoming another Julia Roberts, whom I absolutely hate. Ms. Roberts had her own fluke hits like "My Best Friend's Wedding" and "Conspiracy Theory" but she generally always plays the same thing. Anyhow, Ms. Bullock is more attractive and talented. Her Golden Globe nomination is well deserved. Michael Caine was very funny (when isn't he when he's trying?) and Benjamin Bratt makes a better couple with Sandra then real life Julia. Candace Bergen was funny too, and it's good to see her acting again. Let's hope the rumors are true that she's going to star with Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray. & Harvey Keitel in the upcoming mobster comedy "Wedding Contract." No one could ever hold a light to the likes of Ms. Weaver (getting off track again) but anyhow, I enjoyed this film, and if you have a sense of humor, you might too. Not to be judgmental, but if you like "Runaway Bride" or "Notting Hill" better with the clunky dialogue and the extremely bad acting, you need help.She (Bullock) has a way of landing on her feet and remaining simpatico no matter how cheesy the script is. That's what happens here.Tomboyish FBI agent Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) is forced to go undercover in the Miss United States beauty pageant to prevent a terrorist known only as "The Citizen" from bombing the event. Miss Congeniality is based on a screenplay written by Marc Lawrence, Katie Ford, and Caryn Lucas. It was followed by Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous (2005) (2005). "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago (1965) (1965). The lyrics begin "Somewhere my love there will songs to sing..." When Gracie hears that Frank (Steve Monroe) has taken the crown to get polished, it dawns on her that he is planting the bomb in it. As Stan (William Shatner) begins to read off the names of the runners-up, Gracie tries to alert Eric (Benjamin Bratt) but she can't be understood amidst the clamor and excitement on stage. Fourth runnerup California, third runnerup Nebraska, second runnerup Texas. Gracie is named first runnerup, leaving the crown to Rhode Island. When the crown is placed on Cheryl's (Heather Burns) head, Gracie attempts to rip it off, making everyone think that she is a sore loser trying to steal the crown. In the ruckus that follows, Eric knocks out Frank who drops the detonator onstage, Kathy (Candice Bergen) picks it up and detonates the bomb just as Gracie gets the crown away from Cheryl and tosses it in the air, blowing up the Statue of Liberty instead. Kathy and Frank are arrested, and Eric and Gracie agree to go out on a date when they get back to New York and Gracie "gets all ugly again." Just as Eric and Gracie are about to leave in a taxi, Victor Melling (Michael Caine) comes running out of the hotel, yelling about an incendiary device being spotted in the farewell breakfast room.
