Two NYC cops arrest a Yakuza member and must escort him when he's extradited to Japan.
When a member of the Japanese Yakuza is arrested in New York, detectives Nick Conklin and Charlie Vincent are assigned to escort him to Japan. Conklin in particular is none too pleased that they are not prosecuting the prisoner themselves. They no sooner arrive in Japan however than they are duped and turn their prisoner over to gangsters posing as police. The detectives stay on in Japan hoping to work with their Japanese counterparts but have some difficulty dealing with local protocol and customs. Over time, Conklin develops a working relationship with Detective Masahiro and together they manage to ensure justice is served.
Black rain, turns out to be the most underrated movie of Ridley Scott. But this was not close to being special by his standards.Michael Douglas is back with a cop this time.A cop set to investigate about Japanese Mafia but he gets involve between the ongoing war between them.Andy Garcia also does well. The movie could have been much better.Expectations were higher being a Ridley Scott film but never lives up to it.Not bad as well.Action is gripping & compelling.Decent pop-corn action flick but just don't apply too much mind to it or else movie would turn out to be more of a time killer.I am never a fan of Michael Douglas though i felt,Ridley Scott could have given this role to someone else rather than him.The ending is good but very much predictable.Too far from being perfect but still a decent enough cop action thriller.
First of all, I'm not a film snob. I love ridiculous action movies and I enjoy a good 80s cop movie. And yes, there is always some sexism and cultural insensitivity inherent in any older movie - it comes with the territory. Usually I just look past it or ignore it or laugh it off. But less than 30 minutes into this movie, I'm wondering why the h-e-double-hockey-sticks haven't the Japanese police force kicked those two stupid American cops out of their country!
Michael Douglas plays Nick, a thoroughly unlikeable New York detective with no apparent redeeming qualities. The film presents him as the troubled hero, with children and an ex wife and bills to pay and those pesky Internal Affairs cops dogging his steps. And yeah, he might be a little dirty but hey, he's just like you and me, right? Ha. If he has any good qualities, you forget about them as soon as he opens his mouth. He hardly says a word in this movie to friend or foe that isn't some kind of abuse, showing off his "tough guy" attitude, his "I'm a badass American cop, watch how manly and rough I am" persona. He spouts so much abuse at any character that crosses his path, I was really hoping he would get killed off. But nope! No such luck!
He and his younger, much more likable (but still kind of a jerk) partner Charlie escort Japanese criminal Sato back to Japan where they unwittingly allow him to escape. Whoops. Then they proceed to bluster their way through the local police department, insulting their hardworking counterparts left and right and generally making a nuisance of themselves. (Lots of manly posturing and whining and "hey, we're cops too, let us play...even though we don't know any of your laws, procedures, customs, language, etc...whatever, we're still better cops than you!) They mock their Japanese hosts at every opportunity and get all upset when they don't receive respect in return. They even steal evidence from a crime scene and expect to be THANKED for it.
Then Charlie, who was at least trying to be polite and friendly to the local PD, gets freaking decapitated and we're left with only Giant A-Hole Nick. Oh joy. Supposedly all of this murder and mayhem results in some kind of redemption for Nick, but by the time it happens I just couldn't care less about the man.
I've seen a lot of East Meets West movies, a lot of cop movies, a lot of action movies...but very few of them had me rooting AGAINST the main character from the very first scene. The only thing that saved this movie from being a complete wash was the cinematography and the great atmosphere. Very cool. Unfortunately, not enough to distract from how much I just hated Nick and everything he said or did. Which was, alas, most of the movie.
Director Ridley Scott's visual gifts are still evident in Black Rain. But with retread plot and characters, Scott's stylistic flourishes become irritating clutter.
It's part of the bushido code of conduct that the ancient samurai and the yakuza gangsters adhere to. During the days of the Japanese warlords and the samurai, a dishonorable act carried the punishment of severing one's own finger or part of. The idea was that a samurai that was missing part of a finger or multiple fingers wouldn't be able to wield his katana (samurai sword) as effectively. The Japanese word for the act is yubitsume. On August 6th and 9th, 1945, during World War II, the United States dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities. The first, on August 6th, was the western city of Hiroshima, which had been a major Japanese shipping port and industrial production site. The second bomb was dropped on another western city, Nagasaki, three days later when Emperor Hirohito refused to surrender. Following the devastation of those bombings, Hirohito ordered his country's surrender, ending the United States' war with Japan.
Sugai's involvement in this chain of events is that he lived in one of those cities -- which city is not revealed -- as a boy and was there when the bomb was dropped. As he states "I was 10 when the B-29 came. We were underground for three days. When we came up, the city was gone. Then the heat brought rain; black rain." What Sugai is suggesting is that the pollution from the atomic fallout had somehow turned the rain black. Sugai goes on to say that following the war American values were forced on to his people by the United States, who had agreed to aid in the rebuilding of Japanese society due to the destruction caused not only by the atomic bombings but also from the many other non-atomic bombings of other Japanese cities during the war in the Pacific. The United States became Japan's occupying force following the war and Japanese citizens like Sugai felt that their cultural and societal identity was slowly being stolen from them as a result of such policies. Sugai's ultimate plan is to flood the American economy with counterfeit money and reap the benefits of such a crime. a5c7b9f00b
