Book descriptionThere are two types of short story collections. Ones where the stories are linked by theme or even style and those where the stories are completely link free. Papas stories, the first in the book, (I dont know why I expected the stories to alternate between those of the two authors), are all linked in theme and style. She has crafted 7 tightly written stories of relationships in trouble or in conflict. In Goodbye Lunch two sisters prepare to say the unsayable, why they will never see one another again. Its powerful with the emotions deftly handled. A mother-in-law rounds on her daughter-in-law she clearly thinks is beneath her beloved son and the two do battle in a most unforgiving way. A married couple argue over the husbands continued drinking flouting his promise to go on the wagon. Each is trying to hold their ground, hold their identity in the face of the other trying to meld their personality to suit their own demands. The ending for this was particularly potent. In another tale, an alcoholic wife has already surrendered her husband before the story begins and she is left to weigh up the relative merits of him against the bottle, when the denouement brings them crashing together in a viciously cruel way. In the final story, a gold-digger awaits the death of her cash-cow and the inheritance she is surely due. The stories definitely feel all of a piece, small in intimate scale, but expanding out with the enormity and universality of the emotions on show.Tullets stories on the other hand are not linked thematically or through a tightly self-contained stylism. Stories about an artist, two about killers, a civilian having to land a plane, a father to be rushing to get to the hospital in time for the birth. There is a lot of breathlessness described in the writing, but the writings rhythms tend to counteract this. The father to be story is my favourite of Tulletts, but the two about killers I felt didnt really get inside the protagonists heads or convey anything new about such a psyche.
