The D-Reaper had been spying on the team all along and it finally reveals itself when Takato falls into the depths of the reaper with Guilmon.
After several episodes in which the current crisis has only been glimpsed, everything takes a leap forward by placing the heroes in the thick of it. First, I'm going to get my usual complaints out of the way. It's kind of unnecessary to hear Dobermon's gruff monologue again; the accompanying melodrama is no better the second time. The scenes of the tamers in some type of grid are all interesting on a visual level, but Henry's just goes over his aversion to fighting for the hundredth time, revealing an experience that not only should have been brought up MUCH earlier, but is also an unnecessary explanation for why Henry has been so restrained all this time. The flashback from "It Came From the Other Side", incoherent as it was, filled that role adequately. And if I hear anyone mention one more time how these kids "are the only ones who can do it"…! But these gripes are comparatively minor as this is an exceptionally well made episode, one of the series best.
Going back to those grid scenes, these provide a fairly unique opportunity for the kids to simply be alone with their thoughts and reflect on their experiences. It's captivating, to say the least, and the type of stuff for which Digimon is famous for but rarely gets right. The fight sequence with the Creep Hands (my personal favorite D-Reaper agent) is thrilling, giving the impression that everyone has just leapt into a great conflict by perfectly capturing the mood of such a development. There's a particularly good, sobering shot of Alice in the foreground, with explosions in the background.
On the Monster Makers side of things, we get another mention of the efforts to bring back the Ark, and Yamaki takes the time to give Janyu a morale boost that mirrors the one Janyu gave him a while ago. This relationship, which began as simple collaboration for a task, has evolved into one of confidants helping each other through challenges, and is more substantial than any amongst the kids. Watch the scene between Rika and Jeri in "No Mon is an Island", then watch this scene and consider the difference. Additionally, it's also good to see Janyu and Dolphin express remorse over what has resulted from their old work, as they are the only two that give us any idea about how they feel about this. It would have been nice to get a little clarification on how this relates to Alice, though.
Perhaps the most memorable thing is that some important aspects of the D-Reaper and its reasoning are revealed. What makes the D-Reaper an effective final enemy is that it is enigmatic, a characteristic it uses to its advantage. The heroes and their allies have to learn about it over the course of the conflict, and all the while it continues to evolve. It's like a crazy game of catch-up. The scene between Takato and the Jeri imposter would be right at home in any horror/sci-fi movie, as the latter conveys the deranged program's intentions and reasoning. For the first time in a while, the D- Reaper earns a strong, eerie presence. The backdrops within the D- Reaper definitely enhance the mood, especially the ominous images of the trees dying. All of this stuff is too tethered to Jeri to be thought provoking, but it does add intr
