Shahid Khan is exiled after impersonating the legendary Sultana Daku in order to rob British trains. Now outcast, Shahid becomes a worker at Ramadhir Singh's colliery, only to spur a revenge battle that passes on to generations. At the turn of the decade, Shahid's son, the philandering Sardar Khan vows to get his father's honor back, becoming the most feared man of Wasseypur.
Inspired by the real-life exploits of local gangs and beginning with the bandit-like career of Shahid Khan in the 1940s, the film follows the ruthless rise of his son Sardar and his offspring, Danish, Perpendicular and Definitive Khans. GANGS OF WASSEYPUR mirrors the tumultuous and explosive growth of modern India with ferocious cinematic intensity.The least likely of Sardar's children - the perpetually stoned Faizal who rises to the top ranks of the Khan crime family, vowing brutal revenge on their longtime nemesis, the wily and seemingly unstoppable Ramadhir Singh.
Opening scene will take you in the time in which the incident is happening, TV serial is used as an element to show time and space and also the whole theme of film "Ik peedhi aati hai, ik peedhi jaati hai, banti kahani nai"(One generation comes other goes, creates new story). First sequence gives a feel of war film or video game. At some parts it is little difficult to understand the narration. Film will also give a feel of TV serial sometimes rather than a film. Very close to reality,a documentary style which is Anurag Kashyap's style. Beautiful use of camera, good art and costume. Songs are beautifully fixed into the story and its nice to see how they merge into as background music. Humor has been created with silence and at some parts with violence, appreciate the performance of actors who handled the piece beautifully. Abuses are an important part which brings the film very close to reality. Also somewhere the spine of film gets weak, because of so many characters. Overall its a gripping film, one can even watch both parts together without getting bored. Music, action and dialogues may take away the real story away from your vision but be with it. I also felt that film is like a collaboration of short films, where different incidents are happening at several places, stories want to say so much but they are just stuffed in. Film is also lacking emotions of sorrow, they hardly transfer to the spectator. With the film moving forward, the main purpose of protagonist seems to be forgotten by him, and story starts revolving around some other unimportant issues. Film is like Mahabharat of kalyug. In male dominating society woman becomes reason for most wars. It is important to see both parts together to understand the whole thing. Or I will say both parts together is one film, which should be released together.
Art movie, Commercial movie or Sci-fi..You get all (Sci-fi coming with the science of bomb making :-)) I couldn't stop watching this movie in spite of aching back, tired eyes, mid night. Got me hooked. Every actor has done justice..no over the top no where you could feel if it was a film..As if you are watching out of your window (if you are or were living in such a place).
For me this is one of Manoj's best work till date..amazing ..He is so natural in his role, can't imagine anyone else doing it.
Dialogues are superb and so close to everyday talks on the street, makes one connect immediately with the characters.
This is a multiple times must watch..Will be a cult classic.
Hats off to Anurag, and all those behind the scenes. I wish there is a Director's cut available on discs. An uncut version no matter how long it is...Actually I wish it to be made like a Sas Bahu serial..that can run for ever :-)
Although the narrative contains echoes of “The Godfather" and “The Godfather Part II" — and perhaps “Casino," in that much of it is structured as a flashback from an assassination attempt — “Gangs" lacks the poetry and character interest of those films.
Yes, the film is based on a completely true story. Except for the names and a few incidents for cinematic and political reasons the entire subject is based on a true story that happened in the real village WASSEYPUR of Dhanbad district in Jharkhand, India. a5c7b9f00b
