In a war-torn world of elemental magic, a young boy reawakens to undertake a dangerous mystic quest to fulfill his destiny as the Avatar, and bring peace to the world.
When the hostile Fire Nation threatens to enslave the Water, Earth, and Air Nations, a reluctant and irresponsible boy must face his destiny as the Avatar, the Chosen One who can restore the world order. This new animated series centers on twelve-year-old Aang, who must forgo his selfish wandering to learn to master his latent powers over the four elements. Only then can he conquer the Firebenders, the evil nation that threatens the world.
I became interested in this show after watching the disappointing first season of its successor, The Legend of Korra. I wondered why people loved it so and doubted it would impress. Well, thank God, I was proved wrong!
This is a fantastic program, one of the finest fantasy series I have ever seen. The characters and their development are finely crafted. The world-building is nothing short of glorious. And though the story is your basic "chosen one fights an evil empire," the show goes beyond black-and-white morality, with characters wondering about the moral implications of their actions.
It's a shame Nickelodeon or any other channel has not had more animated fare like this. Sure, there was Korra, but the writing in that devolved quickly, and I only got a little bit into the second season before I gave up on it. This show is golden and should be seen in its entirety at least once if you love fantasy or adventure.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is a TV series I've been watching since I was nine or ten years old. When I first saw it, I was primarily interested in the goofy characters, the imaginative bending, and the progressing storyline. I hadn't developed a sense of great insight, but I nevertheless enjoyed it thoroughly, like how cartoons should be. This is what I love about the show: it can be an in-depth, character-developing and world-building story, but also a funny, visually entertaining and magical cartoon.
I rewatched it a few years later, and my eyes were suddenly opened to a new world. I appreciated the character's genuine and original personalities, the inventive creatures, the tone that constantly switches between light and dark, the magnificent voice acting, the clever jokes and ultimately, the best part about the series: the character development.
This isn't a cartoon like Spongebob where you can turn on an episode and don't need any context to understand what's happening; this show has an actual story. Each episode is a great chapter in a vast story. (And don't get me wrong, Spongebob is a wonderful show as well).
As the story goes on, you see how the characters react to situations they're put into. This show forgets nothing-they can always relate back to previous experiences which influence the characters' current situation. Some of their reactions may be exciting, boring, disappointing, or even completely surprising. But the amazing thing about it is this-each and every one of the reactions and decisions made by the characters are completely realistic. These characters are completely human, particularly Zuko, my favorite character. He, specifically goes through several challenges and comes out of them in ways that you'd never expect.
The animation is visually appealing, but surely not perfect. However, with the state of technology the show was in as it was made, it did very well for its circumstances. And you can bet I'm thrilled to getting the Blu-Ray when it released next week.
The music is absolutely fantastic. It is touching, layered, thoughtful, and beautifully crafted. The ending music piece (titled, Peace, actually) is something I can always turn on and suddenly feel serenity, wherever I am.
The humor is clever and distributed in many different ways among many different characters. It's constant, and absolutely laughable. Without the humor, this show would be completely different. It is critical in this series for it to work.
Avatar: The Last Airbender has some of the most layered and entertaining characters, some of the most dazzling drawings and designs, some of the most surprising and jaw-dropping events, and some of the most touching moments I've ever had the incredible delight of viewing.
If you have not seen this series, you're not doing yourself any favors by not watching it. And if you're not interested because you think it's anime, it's not. It's a Nick cartoon with mere Japanese-like style and setting.
The biggest problem I have with the show is that I'm beginning to be bored with it a little bit; only because I've watched it about a million times.
But it doesn't matter, because it's just simply amazing.
The Legend of Korra debuted on Nickelodeon in USA on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. (ET/PT) with back-to-back episodes, with regular timeslot on Saturadays at 11:00 a.m. (ET/PT). The arrow tattoos are thought to have originated as a sign of respect for the original Airbenders, the Sky Bison. An Airbender earns his or her arrow tattoos by mastering all 36 tiers of Airbending, or by mastering 35 and creating a new Airbending technique. Aang earned his by inventing the technique he calls the "Air Scooter". Yes In the commentary of the DVD of the last episode of the series the creators stated that after he defeated the Fire Lord and his eyes flashed the avatar state for only second he had become a fully realized Avatar Fire Lord Ozai confirmed that he banished Zuko's mother and that she may still be alive, but it is unsure. In the series finale, Fire Lord Zuko questions his father on the whereabouts of his mother, but the series ends before it is confirmed that she was found. Zuko finding Ursa was actually storyboarded for the finale by Avatar Director Joaquim Dos Santos, but was nixed by Mike DiMartino - not really sure why but this implies that Ursa most likely is alive. In 'The Legend of Korra' the children of Tenzin asks their grandmother, Katara, to tell the story about Zuko's mother, although she was willing to tell the full story, she got interrupted before telling the story.
However, a comic titled 'The Search' was released by Nickelodeon in 3 parts in 2013. The events take place between the end of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and 'The Legend of Korra'. We learn that Ursa, Zuko's mother, returned to her home village of Hira'a after being banished by Ozai. There she found the man whom she was engaged to, Ikem, before being taken away to become Ozai's wife. She then learns of a spirit named The Mother of All Faces, and searches for her to receive a new face, and the spirit also removes almost all memories of her past life. When Zuko learns who his mother is now and finds her, The Mother of All Faces returns Ursa's original face and memories. a5c7b9f00b
